CENTRAL NEW YORK – With its long-awaited match against Christian Brothers Academy still ahead of it this Thursday afternoon at Austin Park, the Skaneateles girls tennis team did not trip through any of the steps leading up to it.
The Lakers met Westhill last Monday afternoon and buzzed through most of that match without much stress, shutting out the Warriors 7-0.
Kenna Ellis, blanking Jillian Eckert 6-0, 6-0, led a singles blitz where Lily Miller took out Delaney Carroll 6-1, 6-0 and Isabelle Sorderberg rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Megan Dwyer.
Only one of the four doubles matches went to three sets, with Kelsey Rutledge and Emma Whipple rallying past Hannah Johnston and Kathleen Rogers 4-6, 6-2, 10-8. The teams of Ella Danforth-Sophia Soderberg, Sofia Capozza-Rachel Hackler and Bella Karpinski-Katie Kissel each won in two sets.
When it returned to action Friday against Manlius-Pebble Hill, Skaneateles dropped a couple of points in singles, but swept the doubles to top the Trojans 5-2.
Capozza and Hackler battled past Eden Hildebrandt and Fariel Migeed 7-5, 6-4, with Danforth and Sophia Soderberg getting past Caroline Mezzalingua and Emily Zeitsev 6-4, 6-1. Kelsey Rutledge and Emma Whipple blanked Schuyler King and Dahlia Nemes 6-0, 6-0 as, by those same scores, Isabelle Soderberg topped Sabrina Loop.
Back in action last Friday, Marcellus defeated Homer 4-1 as, in doubles, Korinne Kemp and Claire Wrona rallied past Georgianna Goodwin and Charlotte Wallis 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Sydney Colono and Kara Wangsness won 6-3, 7-5 over Lauren Franco and Molly Gallagher.
Maddie Vetsch lost in singles 7-6, 6-4 to Ella Spanbauer, but Danielle Copp handled Emma Effinger 6-2, 7-6 and Lila Kelly claimed a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Madelyn Cotterill.
West Genesee was impressive in last Monday’s 6-1 win over Liverpool, its second win over the Warriors in seven days, with straight-set wins from the doubles teams of Angelina Allen-Margaret Mello, Helena Allen-Hannah Sparks and Ava Amodio-Kailyn Drury.
Isabelle Wells came back in singles to Olivia Magnarelli 4-6, 6-0, 6-4, with Katie Viau routing Diana Kozenyatko 6-1, 6-0 and Angelina Llanos fighting off Angelica Underwood 7-5, 6-3.
In the process, Viau achieved a milestone, earning her 100th career victory. She’s the third WG player to reach 100 wins, joining her doubles partner of three years, Mikayla Mannara, and Samantha Heyn.
Viau could not get a point for the Wildcats in last Tuesday’s 6-1 loss to unbeaten Fayetteville-Manlius, falling to Anna Manta 6-0, 6-1 as Llanos handled Katya Quinn 6-1, 6-0. In doubles, Sparks and Helena Allen let an early lead get away in a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 loss to Parisa Ahmed and Brooke Tester.
On Friday, WG fell to Baldwinsville 5-2. Viau, in singles, routed Hannah Gould 6-1, 6-1, with Drury and Isabelle Wells topping Regan Doan and Ella Tromblee 6-2, 6-3, but the Bees won every other match in straight sets.
Westhill, meanwhile, rebounded from the Skaneateles match to beat Homer 6-1 a day later, with Emma Thornton topping Ella Spanbauer 7-6, 6-2 in singles as Mia Doss rolled past Madelyn Cotterill 6-1, 6-2.
To sweep the doubles, the Warriors needed Carroll and Jillian Eckert to pair up and rally past Georgianna Goodwin and Charlotte Wallis 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. Dwyer teamed with Rachel Colucci and Hannah Johnston paired with Olivia Antoine for straight-sets wins as Isabella Johnson and Kathleen Rogers won 6-4, 6-2 over Rachel Bouwens and Georgia Wallis.
Jordan-Elbridge took a 6-1 defeat to Cazenovia last Monday afternoon, saved from a shutout by Anisa Bort’s 6-0, 6-0 singles romp over Baylee Pierce as one singles and two doubles matches had to be forfeited.
By that 6-1 margin a day later, the Eagles lost to Chittenango, with Bort’s 6-1, 6-0 win over Brianna Crystal the lone blemish for the Bears, who were aided by three J-E forfeits.
