ONONDAGA COUNTY – Twice in as many outings, the Skaneateles girls swim team managed victories against schools with far larger enrollments.
First, it was a win over Cicero-North Syracuse on Sept. 8. Then, in Tuesday’s meet at Baldwinsville, Skaneateles kept it up, prevailing 58-32 as Hana Spaulding continued to dazzle.
Swimming in the 200-yard freestyle, Spaulding tore to a time of one minute, 55.55 seconds ahead of Sophia Soprano’s 2:17.10. Then she won the 100 freestyle in 53.33 seconds, with Caitlin Comer (1:01.93) in the runner-up spot.
Amelia Musso was victorious in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.63, with Kyla Palmer second. Already, Musso had helped Comer, Palmer and Ariana Matthews take the 200 medley relay in 2:08.76.
Alice Spaulding got her title in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:14.20 to Matthews’ 1:20.53, this following a 200 freestyle relay where Matthews, Comer and the Spaulding sisters posted 1:46.84. Lili Winkelman helped Musso and the Spauldings go 4:02.97 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Seven days will pass before the Lakers host West Genesee. Prior to that, the Wildcats went to Liverpool on Thursday and lost, 110-75, to the Warriors.
Anna Ivery twice broke through for race wins to lead WG, going 25.78 seconds to pull away in the 50 freestyle before holding off Liverpool’s Emerson Gellert, 1:07.12 to 1:07.98, to take the 100 butterfly.
Allison Putnam prevailed, too, needing 5:51.77 to hold off the Warriors’ Kaitlyn Thompson (5:54.44) in the 500 freestyle after she finished second in the 200 freestyle in 2:12.14.
Angie Gittschau got second place in the 200 individual medley in 2:36.71 as Lily Mauro got 178.30 points for second place in diving. Maddie Owczarczyk took second in the 100 freestyle in 1:03.43 and Allie Ivery was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke in 1:27.74.
Putnam, Adriana Gill, Kayleigh Adams and Anna Ivery got a win in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:12.75 after a 200 freestyle relay where Gittschau, Ivery, Putnam and Gill posted 1:52.35, just behind the Warriors’ 1:51.11.
