CENTRAL NEW YORK – Temperatures cooled as September rolled around and the area’s group of varsity high school boys golf teams hit the hearts of their respective schedules.
And a big match loomed for 3-0 West Genesee Gold when it took on 4-0 Baldwinsville last Wednesday at Westvale – and both sides would stay undefeated, having reached the same final score of 187, though by having a better sixth score the Wildcats could claim a victory.
Rain had softened the Westvale course, and both sides attacked. B’ville’s duo of Aidan Farmer and Aiden Motala both shot 35 for nine holes, but WG Gold’s Connor Christie claimed individual honors with a 34.
Three other Wildcats – Ryan Till, Joe Snyder and Ben Glass – each shot 36, meaning the Bees would have to come from behind, which it did.
It took Evan Trasher posting 37, plus Trey Ordway and Austin McClintic each getting 40, to equal WG Gold’s total that was established when Eric Korzeniewski earned a 39.
Before this, WG Gold shot 193 to WG Blue’s 226 when the two sides met Sept. 2. Max Lauricella and Cameron Hotaver both posted 36, with Connor Christie adding a 39 and Owen Zoanetti a 41 matched by Eric Korzeniewski. Lincoln Christopher led WG Blue with a 43 ahead of 46s by Max DeMass, Anthony Pirro, Jake Elinich and Max Walker.
WG Blue improved its score to 209 in last Thursday’s match with Cicero-North Syracuse Blue, with Pirro posting a 40 at Westvale ahead of Ashton Fassinger’s season-best 41. DeMass and Jason Clifton both had 42s and Walker added a 44.
Westhill, who was 2-1 following a narrow Sept. 1 defeat to Christian Brothers Academy, rebounded by routing Mexico 177-237 a day later at Emerald Crest, with Anthony Maglisco shooting a 32.
In all, five Warriors broke 40, with Luke Gilmartin getting a 35 as Devin and Danny Young matched each other with 36, with Grady Pens adding a 38. Aidan Ryan finished with a 43.
Skaneateles had only played once prior to last week, handling Jordan-Elbridge on Aug. 27, before it went to Vesper Hills nearly a week later and rolled past Tully 217-257.
Shawn Luce led the Lakers with a 38, two ahead of Tyson DiRubbo’s 40. Ryan Shute shot a 42 for the Black Knights, but Jack Marquardt (45), Bode Gutchess (46) and Will Cowden (48) helped Skaneateles pull away.
Now, testing itself against CBA last Tuesday at Skaneateles Country Club, the Lakers could not quite keep up with the Brothers, absorbing a 207-233 loss.
Luce’s 41 trailed the 39s by CBA teammates Joe Nicholson and Luke Snyder. Three other Brothers were ahead of Marquardt’s 45 as DiRubbo had a 46, ahead of Gutchess (53) and Braden Parker (54).
J-E took a 225-280 defeat to Cazenovia on Sept. 3. Colin Jewsbury shot a 52 at Cazenovia Country Club, with Ben Weller adding a 52 as Jack Byrnes and Liam Colligan each posted 41 to lead the hosts.
But the Eagles reached the win column last Tuesday by topping Phoenix 269-286. Jewsbury’s 43 was six shots clear of the Firebirds’ Blake Hoyt as Ben Weller shot a 52 and Caden Hearn added a 54. David Lawless, with a 59, was two shots ahead of Alex Waldron’s 61.
It proved different Friday, J-E falling to Westhill 196-259 at Millstone. Ryan’s 37 was two better than the Eagles’ Devin King, whose 39 was matched by Maglisco and Young. Gilmartin added a 41 ahead of Jewsbury’s 45. Weller shot a 47.
