All through the regular season, the Christian Brothers Academy boys track and field team had grown accustomed to finishing in front, sweeping the regular-season and post-season honors in the OHSL Liberty division.
But when the Brothers visited Marcellus for the May 28 Section III Class B-2 championship meet, it did not have multi-event star Tre Williams available — and, at the same time, found an opponent that asserted its depth and dominance everywhere.
CBA still managed 80 points for second place, only to find Holland Patent smother the Brothers — and the rest of the nine-team field — with 207.5 points to earn the top spot.
Tom Voorheis did provide a highlight in the mile, winning that event in a time of 4:26.39 as teammate Brendan Smith finished fourth in 4:36.88.
John Dunmore emerged with a victory in the long jump, going 20 feet 4 1/4 inches to gain the top spot, while Jameel Balenton (19 feet 10 1/2 inches) earned third place.
Matt Giannino ran 800 meters in 2:00.53, finishing second behind HP’s Eric Stys (1:59.79), and joined Voorheis, Smith and Jared Sayles to post second in the 4×800 relay in 8:24.25 as, again, the Golden Knights prevailed (8:21.78), part of a sweep of all three relay events.
In the shot put, Macky MacPherson tossed it 45 feet 8 inches, second to Ilion’s Alex Benoit (47 feet 4 1/2 inches). Freshman Will Brower emerged to earn the victory in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 17.06 seconds. Brower also was fifth in the high jump (5 feet 4 inches) and sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:05.25.
Zach Taylor, with 1,927 points, took third place in the pentathlon. Jack Lenkiewicz (10:37.91) and Steve Anderson (10:54.80) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
A day earlier, the combined Bishop Grimes/Bishop Ludden girls track team finished fifth in the Class B-1 meet at Solvay, earning 45 points and winning a couple of events.
The Cobras’ Samantha Schaefer earned a total of 2,151 points in the pentathlon, topping Skaneateles’ Emily Wood (2,082 points) and the rest of the field.
Melissa Buttner beat out another Skaneateles star, Carly Strods, to take first place in the 800 in 2:25.84, and Jessica Curry needed 5:01.17 to win the 1,500-meter run by more than six seconds over Marcellus’ Lizzy Dean.
Elizabeth Black was second in the 3,000-meter run in 11:14.36, while Lea Tanner got third place in the 100 (13.25 seconds).
