CAZENOVIA — This spring, Catherine Saunders announced the closing of her Cazenovia business, Fauna Pet Supply.
Officially opened in the Town & Country Plaza on Jan. 18, 2020, the store sells pet food and supplies and offers a self-serve dog wash.
Saunders, who grew up in Cazenovia, is a lifetime pet owner with experience professionally pet-sitting and volunteering with a cat adoption agency. Fauna Pet Supply is her first store.
“I’m closing the business because my commercial lease is coming up on renewal soon and I’m not in a position to comfortably sign on for two more years,” Saunders explained.
According to a May 28 Facebook post, Fauna will be liquidating its inventory over the next couple weeks and will not be placing new orders. However, the website will be operational for a few more weeks, and the dog wash will be running until the store closes its doors.
“It has been an absolute privilege to serve the Cazenovia community and get to know the wonderful people and animals from the area,” Saunders said. “There’s no aspect of having run Fauna that I won’t remember fondly, but I’ll especially miss interacting with the dogs that visit the store.”
She added that despite operating her store almost entirely in difficult and uncertain times, she has been overwhelmed by the amount of support she has received.
“From behind the Fauna counter, I’ve been able to see how much people in our community care about each other and all the funky fauna that inhabit our town,” she said. “I have seen countless lucky animals whose owners take the extra effort to improve a little life. It’s been heartwarming to witness the dedication this community has when it comes to giving their animals back some of the love they receive. I’d like to sincerely thank everyone who came in to support the mission of offering a local option with a personal touch to help people improve their pets’ lives.”
