ONONDAGA COUNTY – Summer-like warmth greeted area high school track and field teams throughout a full week of competition.
It peaked last Wednesday with neighbors Westhill and Solvay squaring off, and the Warriors got the best of it on both sides, the boys defeating the Bearcats 82-49 and the girls prevailing 108-17.
Vincent Tarolli led Westhill by claiming first place in the 400-meter dash in 54.9 seconds and the 110 hurdles in 18.9 seconds, while Carter Buckman, who cleared 9 feet in the pole vault, took first in the 400 hurdles in 1:06.8.
Cameron Niezybatowski swept the throwing events, heaving the discus 72 feet 1 ½ inches and tossing the shot put 26’8 1/2”. Evan Frost got first in the 100-meter dash in 11.4 seconds.
Jackson Powers had a long jump of 17’1” and Westhill swept the distance races, Andrew O’Reilly taking the 800 in 2:16.5, Brian Kenny going 5:55.8 in the 1,600 and Brandon Mulholland winning the 3,200 in 11:39.1.
Solvay had some individual standouts, too, whether it was Allen Knight-Cawthon taking the 200-meter dash in 23.8 seconds, Luis Mojica going 32’2 1/2” in the triple jump or Brandon Burke clearing 4’10” in the high jump.
Angie Mesa-Espinosa was Westhill’s main standout in the girls meet, claiming three events as she went 12.7 seconds in the 100 sprint, earned a top long jump of 15’6” and then won the 200 in 26.1 seconds, also helping the Warrors’ 4×100 relay team prevail in 51.3 seconds.
Prevailing twice, Ashley Bolesh went 34’5” in the triple jump and 1:11.9 to take the 400 hurdles, while titles also went to Kaylin Battista (100 hurdles), Katherine Bendall (high jump), Colleen Patrie (shot put), Kemery Sanborn (discus), Mary Rewakowski (pole vault), Julianna Gwilt (400 sprint), Hannah Starowicz (800) and Ellie Thornton (1,500).
Solvay had its two teams go to Phoenix last Monday afternoon, with the girls Bearcats taking a 102-25 defeat to the Firebirds. Allie Dooher stood out for the Solvay girls, taking the long jump by going 14’10” and the high jump by clearing 4’6”.
Jordan-Elbridge was unbeaten going into last Wednesday’s first-place OHSL Liberty division showdown with Cazenovia, only to take a 93-47 defeat to the Lakers.
The Eagles still had Kyler Langhorn win three events, going 13.1 seconds in the 100 sprint and adding a top long jump of 14’7 1/2″ and triple jump of 32 feet. Coral Uhle took the 400 sprint in 1:03.9 as Jazymn Stevenson took the discus (69’7″) and 200 (27.5 seconds), with Tatiana Parkolap clearing 5 feet in the high jump.
West Genesee had both of its teams go up against Fayetteville-Manlius on that same Wednesday, with the boys close in a 71-65 defeat to the Hornets and the girls Wildcats taking a 106-31 loss.
Dominick Burns won twice for WG’s boys, going 19’10 1/2” in the long jump as he also took the 100 in 11.2 seconds and helped Connor Scott, Brandon Scott and Justin Byrne win the 4×100 in 45.2 seconds.
For their part, Byrne cleared 9’6” to win the pole vault, Brandon Scott was first in the triple jump with 37’2 1/2” and Connor Scott went 22.8 seconds to win the 200 as Bryan Reichert won the 110 hurdles in 18.7 seconds.
All of WG’s wins in the girls meet came in field events, where Vivian Youmans threw the discus 90’9” and Alexis Rydelek had a top shot put toss of 27’5”, while Madison Frost cleared 6 feet in the pole vault.
