ONONDAGA COUNTY – More than any of the other spring sports, boys tennis depends on having dry courts, something that was proving elusive in the first two weeks of this long-awaited 2021 season.
But Jamesville-DeWitt was able to open its schedule last Monday afternoon, the Red Rams dominating its match against Auburn as it put away the Maroons 7-0.
One singles match was forfeited to Carson Souser, but Essex Glowaki and Mark Bratslavsky both played and both won by 6-0, 6-0 margins, Glowaki over Michael Clark, Bratslavsky over Riley Fitzgerald.
In a similar fashion, J-D’s top doubles team of Mike Bratslavsky and Luke Cantone put away Jack Carbonaro and Matt Humphrey 6-0, 6-0, with Nathan Chen and Ryan Collins winning 6-1, 6-1 over Ryan Stechuchak and Troy Wagner.
With William Parratt and Cooper Werner taking a forfeit, Shreyank Bhatt and William Sharlow got their own 6-0, 6-0 shutout, beating Brody Wagner and Malik Wililams.
A day later, J-D dominated again, handling Fulton 7-0 as Glowaki and Mark Bratslavsky surrendered just one game in four sets of singles play, while the doubles teams of Cantone-Mike Bratslavsky, Chen-Collins and Sharlow-Aiden Usher did not lose any games at all.
Off until Friday, Fayetteville-Manlius returned to face Cicero-North Syracuse and, though it gave up its first point of the season, still handled the Northstars 6-1.
A default in singles led to that C-NS point, but in the other singles matches the Hornets saw Cameron Lukasik blank Matt Jordan 6-0, 6-0 as Fergus Brady handled Jamie Courtright 6-1, 6-0.
Pushed to three sets in doubles, Ben Farber-McEntee and Andy Sun held off Ryan Hill and Brandon Millias 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 as the teams of Jaden Duggal-Davin Woodrirdge, Andrew Li-Charlie Loh and Gene Balian-Dan Manta each won in two sets.
Earlier in the week, East Syracuse Minoa had its own match against Auburn, but got a different result as the Spartans fell 5-2 to the Maroons.
Luke Tumulty earned ESM’s singles point in a forfeit, but Jack Satterlee and Noah Satterlee both lost in two sets. It was the same in doubles, Carter Jacobs and Ari Oviedo gaining a Spartans forfeit but Auburn sweeping the other matches.
By contrast, Christian Brothers Academy found success in its opener, handling Pulaski 5-0. Ben Vlassis, Soren Kanh and Chris Cuomo each won their singles matches without dropping a game.
Finn Doyle and Roy Nasr went a bit further in doubles, but won 6-0, 6-2 over Austin Durfane and Brian Pond as Fabrizio Arezzo and Will Vandemeer won 6-0, 6-0 over Colton Dufrane and Cody Mullins.
Manlius-Pebble Hill took a 5-0 defeat to Mexico, with Alex Fung getting closest to a point in singles for the Trojans, though he lost 7-6, 6-1 to the Tigers’ Harley Wakeman. Then the Trojans lost 3-2 to Onondaga-Westhill despite Fung’s 6-3, 6-4 singles win over Paul Okhman.
