ONONDAGA COUNTY – While it had proved impressive against most of its competition in this abbreviated spring season, it was still important for the Cicero-North Syracuse girls volleyball team to maintain its preeminence against its biggest rival.
And the Northstars did so, defeating Liverpool in four sets last Wednesday night, though the rematch was a bit closer than the sweep C-NS had over the Warriors back on March 30.
After an opening set that went 25-17 in the Northstars’ favor, Liverpool stepped up in the second set and, earning a 25-21 victory, got even in the match.
The third set was competitive, too, but once C-NS prevailed 25-20, it would put together a strong fourth set and, by a comfortable 25-15 margin, closed out the match.
Cassidy Ormond put together 31 assists, 10 digs, three aces and five kills. Brooke Segars and Alita Santangelo had eight kills apiece, Segars adding 12 digs.
Maddy Howell and McKenna Johnston both finished with seven kills, with Natalie Tice matching Ormond’s five kills. Hannah Mingle produced 23 digs on the defensive side.
Right before facing each other, C-NS and Liverpool both prevailed in sweeps last Monday night – the Northstars over Nottingham, the Warriors over Henninger.
C-NS handled the Bulldogs 25-10, 25-14, 25-14 as Ormond picked up 12 assists and Lexi Waite helped with 10 assists. Mingle had six digs as McKenna Johnston got four kills, with Brooke Segars, Alita Santangelo and Madison Roche earned three kills apiece.
Meanwhile, Liverpool got its second win of the season over the Black Knights, only to have tough meets the rest of the week – first against C-NS, then Saturday when it lost to Baldwinsville
Back on Friday, C-NS kept it going against West Genesee, handling the Wildcats 25-11 and 25-14 in the first two sets and then, after dropping the third set 25-22, closing out the Wildcats 25-17 in the fourth.
Improving to 10-2 overall, the Northstars featured Johnston getting 13 kills and 12 digs as Howell earned 10 kills and three blocks.
Santangelo had eight kills, with Segars and Tice getting seven kills apiece and Segars contributing 11 kills. Passing to all of them, Ormond gained 39 assists as Lexi Waite added eight assists and Mingle, along with 24 digs, got four aces. Madison Roche contributed seven digs.
This happened right before Liverpool took on Baldwinsville Saturday, with the Warriors fairly close in the opening set before falling to the Bees 25-21, 25-19, 25-14 and seeing its record slip to 2-8 overall.
