BALDWINSVILLE – Twice within a 48-hour span, the Baldwinsville girls swim team tested itself against top-notch programs in its last two home meets of this abbreviated 2021 season.
First, the Bees battled undefeated Christian Brothers Academy Tuesday night, where on an individual and team basis B’ville made some strides despite a 55-37 defeat.
In the best individual race of the night, Eva Smith challenged CBA star Kayla Newman in the 500-yard freestyle. Smith finished in five minutes, 23.91 seconds, while Newman prevailed in 5:13.08.
Ashley Konz, in 2:30.54, took second in the 200 individual medley to the 2:18.68 from the Brothers’ Ella Zaryski, while Makenna Williams was second in the 50 freestyle and Lilly Rogers second in the 100 freestyle.
Konz, Smith, Erin Gruppe and Madeline Sauro swam to 2:08.17 in the 200 medley relay, trailing CBA’s 2:04.52.
Then it was B’ville hosting Jamesville-DeWitt Thursday night, and it featured Smith winning two different races despit the Bees’ 52-42 defeat to the Red Rams.
In her best race, the 100 backstroke, Smith finished in 1:00.98, part of a 1-2 effort with Konz, who posted 1:05.05. This followed a 100 freestyle where Smith, in 56.71 seconds, pulled away from J-D’s Claire Huyck (59.32) to prevail.
Before all this, Konz improved to 2:26.96 in the 200 IM to win that event by more than 10 seconds over the Rams’ Lucy Heflin (2:37.72).
Sauro got second place in both the 50 freestyle (28.62 seconds) and 500 freestyle (6:14.69), while Gruppe was second in the 200 freestyle in 2:25.96. Williams finished second in the 100 butterfly.
For its two remaining meets next week, B’ville travels to Cazenovia College to face Fayetteville-Manlius and to Nottingham High School to face Syracuse City.
