On Saturday, March 28, the New Woodstock Free Library will hold its first “Superheroes Day.”
Open to children of all ages and their families, the program will run from 10 a.m. to noon with continuous superhero-themed activities, take-home crafts, and refreshments.
Program participants will have the opportunity to move through a number of creative stations and have their superhero passports stamped along the way.
Activities will be appropriate for all ages, including young children with the assistance of parents, siblings or friends.
Participants are encouraged to wear superhero costumes, masks or accessories, and to bring in superhero figurines or toys to share.
According to Library Director Norm Parry, the idea for the program was inspired by the popularity of comic book and blockbuster film characters like Spiderman and Superman, and by the library’s vast collection of superhero books and movies.
“Superhero culture is the modern epic struggle between good and evil with the future of civilization in the balance,” said Parry. “At base, we all love to see the good guys win and the bad guys get their comeuppance. But beyond that dramatic tension, superheroes are just plain good fun. What’s better than to teach young people important life lessons while enjoying great stories, great art and inspiring narratives?”
Parry, who grew up reading DC and Marvel comics, credits such materials for helping to inspire him to pursue a career within the library field.
“I could hardly wait for the latest [issue] to hit the supermarkets,” he said. “As soon as they arrived, I’d swoop in and scarf up my favorites. Eventually, I got a job in the supermarket so I could afford my reading habit and get first dibs on the latest mags. I suspect my early fascination with comics and reading led me to become a librarian. I still love seeing the latest bestsellers come in.”
Space is limited. Registration is requested by Monday, March 23 by phone, email or in person.
