Cazenovia boys tennis takes defeats to CBA, Skaneateles

Undefeated league rivals control matches against Lakers

CENTRAL NEW YORK – Having established themselves as two of the best sides in the Onondaga High School League, the Cazenovia and Christian Brothers Academy boys tennis teams put their unbeaten marks on the line last Monday afternoon.

And the Lakers could not dislodge the Brothers in any of the matches, ultimately taking a 5-0 defeat.

Evan Molloy, playing first singles, fell to Chanu Yang 6-4, 6-1. In equal 6-1, 6-2 matches, Max Reger lost to Hunter Szatkowski and Robbie Dorus lost to Andrew Arcuri 6-1, 6-2.

It wasn’t that different on the doubles side, with CBA’s Joe Riccelli and Soren Kang topping Cooper Frazee and Liam Roberston 6-3, 6-2 as Sam Kagey and Eli Revelle ran into Caleb Buddie and Div Bhatt and lost 6-3, 6-1.

Quickly recovering from this on Wednesday afternoon, Cazenovia defeated Cortland 4-1, the only defeat coming in first singles when Molloy ran into the Purple Tigers’ Tyler Cranfield and lost 6-0, 6-0.

Otherwise, it was Kagey topping Jeremie Hale 6-3, 6-3 and Robertson dominating Kyle Taylor 6-0, 6-1 in singles. Dorus and Jackson Reger blanked Levi Moskowski and Sai Patel 6-0, 6-0, with Logan Gillis pairing with Max Reger on a 6-3, 6-0 win over Andre Myers and Crixton Crisologo.

Tough as the defeat to CBA was, more difficulties followed on Thursday when another undefeated team, Skaneateles, took bragging rights in the Lakers rivalry in another 5-0 decision.

Max Reger’s 10-2 defeat to Noah Soderberg was closer than the other two singles matches where Frazee lost to Jake Salzhauer 10-0 and Robertson fell to Peter Salzhauer 10-1.

Both of the doubles matches proved closer. Kagey and Jackson Reger had a 10-6 defeat to Will Salzhauer and Lucas Woodcock, with Dorus and Molloy pairing up and falling to James Lovier and Asher Kozub 10-4.

Chittenango had its own clash with CBA two days after Cazenovia did, single-set matches to eight games where the Bears only broke through once in a 6-1 defeat.

It came in doubles, where Finnegan Gardner and Griffin Brzuszkiewicz worked past Jacob Sturgen and Nick DiBiase 8-3. Vince DiNatale and Seamus Gardner were competitive falling to Riccelli and Kang 8-5, while the singles trio of Logan Bronner, Seth Boulter and Noah Edwards had just one game between them.
