Baldwinsville softball takes 6-5 defeat to Fayetteville-Manlius

Bees again find itself in close game against SCAC Metro rival

BALDWINSVILLE – All through the first half of the regular season the Baldwinsville softball team has battled for consistency and now finds itself engaging in close contests against most of its SCAC Metro division rivals.

Having edged Liverpool 4-3 on April 24, the Bees returned to action exactly one week later and had a different result at home, falling 6-5 to Fayetteville-Manlius.

This was a vastly improved Hornets team from seasons past even though it had not won any league game since the 2023 season. It traded runs with B’ville throughout the first four innings, each side scoring at least once as it tied 4-4.

The Bees inched in front 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth, but in the top of the sixth F-M eighth-grader Avilene Terry hit a solo home run, the second for the game for F-M as Megan Woodridge went deep earlier.

Then in the top of the seventh the Hornets’ Anna Egan doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored the go-ahead run on Sam Monroe’s single.

Seventh-grader Katie Modugno then earned the final three outs, having replaced starting pitcher Alexis Hamilton in the fifth. It was the first time Modugno had pitched a varsity game.

Julianna Gingrich carried the Bees at the plate with a home run, double and single that led to four RBIs. Marissa McCloud got two hits and Jenna Martin scored twice as Mackenzie Southworth pitched a complete game with four strikeouts.

Tough games await the Bees this week, including a rematch with F-M, a trip to the Gillette Road complex Friday to face West Genesee and then a Saturday clash with Chittenango, no. 14 in the state Class A rankings.
