CENTRAL NEW YORK – Local rivals battled on the wrestling mat last Wednesday night and it was Marcellus getting the best of Jordan-Elbridge, in large measure due to timing.
The Mustangs won the first seven bouts on the card, all but clinching honors before the Eagles could get on the board and eventually prevailing by a score of 52-22.
They opened at 152 pounds where Trevor Rankin took five minutes to get an 18-2 technical fall on Adam Delcostello, with Anthony Decapio following up at 160 pounds pinning Micah Muhlnickel in the second period.
A second technical fall came from Jayden Abbott against 170-pound opponent Glen Sanchez 17-2, with Elliott Barbosa (190 pounds) needing just 97 seconds to pin Drake Allen.
Two more pins followed, Caleb Posecznick finishing off 215-pound opponent Ethan Sanchez in the second period and, at 285 pounds, Chris Doshna needing just 55 seconds to pin Noah White and move his record to 17-1.
Only at 108 pounds, after a forfeit to Brayden Borst at 101, did J-E get on the board with Mason Tanner pinning Knoll McCoy in 87 seconds.
Three other Eagles won, Liam Mantell blanking Blaine Haney 12-0 at 124 pounds before Ben Lamson (131 pounds) pinned Charles Orr in the second period and Logan Merriam (145 pounds) got his own second-period fall over Hollis Child.
Marcellus added two more mat wins, with Jake Burton pinning 116-pound opponent Tyler Chilson late in the second period and Jack Burton (138 pounds) getting a third-period fall over Ryan Gibbs.
As this went on, West Genesee hosted Auburn and, taking every bout from 145 to 285 pounds, pulled away to beat the Maroons 58-13.
Ali Abumustafa started the string at 145 pinning Gavin Hodson in 85 seconds. After a pair of forfeits Maxx Fesinger (170) moved his record to 21-0 when Sir Temple defaulted due to injury.
At 190 Raul Colon got a 17-2 technical fall over Isaac Brewer in just 95 seconds, with Omar Almlaiti (215) blanking Judah Nord 15-0 before Elijah Apps, at 285, pinned Colton Hai in 79 seconds.
Two other bouts were forfeited, but Austin Fesinger did wrestle at 131 to open the match and needed just 47 seconds Christian Geer, moving to 19-3 on the winter.
West Genesee’s girls team took on Mexico that same night and, by taking six of the 11 bouts, did just enough to earn a 28-27 victory over the Tigers.
Annalise Johnson had the Wildcats’ lone pin at 145 pounds, taking just 59 seconds for her fall over Blaire Coe before Layla Meany (152 pounds) defeated Rosa Curry in a 12-2 technical fall.
At 114 pounds Adaline DeCapio shut out Sara Place 10-0, with Riley Butler (126 pounds) topping Giuliana Jones in a 14-3 technical fall. Forfeits went to Julianna Martini at 100 pounds and Ayana Dishaw at 185 pounds.
