For now, the Cazenovia boys golf team remains a spring program, which means that its early schedule is always subject to the whims of erratic April weather.
But a weekend of bright sunshine preceded a summer-like Monday afternoon that allowed the Lakers to get underway, and it didn’t waste the opportunity, easily claiming its first win of the season by toppling Fabius-Pompey 191-222.
At the Pompey Club, it was Cody Thorp putting up a round that he might not top the rest of the season, a five-under-par 31 that was the top individual effort by a big margin. By contrast, the Falcons’ low individual, Ryan Skeele, had a 40.
Before the Easter break, the Lakers played again 24 hours later, at Glenwood, against Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, in a rain-shortened match where Thorp would shoot a 21 in the holes he was able to complete.
Meanwhile, the Cazenovia girls golf team opened its season last Monday against East Syracuse Minoa at Cazenovia Country Club, where the Lakers took a 231-242 defeat to the Spartans.
Maleigha Ellithorpe just missed grabbing individual honors, shooting a 53, one shot behind ESM’s Audrey Rivers and her 52. Erin Howles added a 57.
The girls golfers at Chittenango started its season last Tuesday, falling to Jamesville-DeWitt 161-183 at Butternut Creek. Megan Pierce shot a 44, one shot better than Rachel Cleary’s total of 45 as, for the Red Rams, Lena Jones produced a 36 to take individual honors.
When Cazenovia took its turn against J-D 24 hours later, the Lakers lost, 193-232, with Ellithorpe shooting a 46 at CCC and Howles improving her total to a 54. Jones again set the pace for the Red Rams with a 39, helped by Alex Catanzarite, who shot 50.
