Officer Jim Gray’s last day of service with the Cicero Police Department was Saturday, Jan, 16. He retired from local law enforcement after nearly 23 years of faithful service with the Cicero Police Department, East Syracuse Police Department, and the Clay Police Department.
Gray began his career with the United States Army on Aug. 19, 1970, and retired as a special agent (chief warrant officer three), United States Army Criminal Investigation Command, on Dec. 31, 1993. He is also a combat veteran. He served as regional director of security for the Massachusetts Trial Court, until 1994, when he became the chief forensics investigator for the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Clay Police Department sponsored Gray through the police academy and he went on to join the Cicero Police Department in August 1998. He also served with the East Syracuse Police Department from April 1999 until the department closed on Dec. 31, 2014.
During Gray’s career, he has been assigned various duties including: road patrol officer, investigator, field training officer, evidence technician, and homicide investigations instructor for the Onondaga County and Syracuse Police Department Police Academies.
Gray is a graduate of the Scotland Yard Chief Inspector Course, London, England, received a master’s degree in forensic science, from the George Washington University, and did a year-long fellowship in forensic medicine and forensic pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.
Members of the Cicero Police Department held a short farewell ceremony after Officer Gray’s last shift recognizing him for more than 50 years of public service.
