CENTRAL NEW YORK – Having separated themselves from most of the Onondaga High School League, the Christian Brothers Academy and Cazenovia boys tennis teams battled for first place last Monday afternoon.
Yet that battle would turn decisively in the Brothers’ favor as, not dropping more than three games in any of the 10 sets, it rolled past the Lakers 5-0.
Chanu Yang got pushed in the first set of his first singles match with Evan Molloy but still won it 6-4, 6-1, while in equal 6-1, 6-2 matches Hunter Szatkowski handled Max Reger and Andrew Arcuri topped Robbie Dorus.
It wasn’t that different on the doubles side, with CBA’s Joe Riccelli and Soren Kang topping Cooper Frazee and Liam Roberston 6-3, 6-2 as Sam Kagey and Eli Revelle ran into Caleb Buddie and Div Bhatt and lost 6-3, 6-1.
As a follow-up CBA defeated Chittenango 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon. Yang, Szatkowski and Arcuri each won their matches in singles without difficulty, while in doubles the Brothers took three of four single-set encounters, the closest of them when Riccelli and Kang beat Vince DiNatale and Seamus Gardner 8-5.
Fayetteville-Manlius tuned up for Monday’s scheduled first-place showdown with Baldiwnsville defeating its neighbors from East Syracuse Minoa 7-0 as Dan Manta led in singles blanking Mike Spilka 6-0, 6-0 and Andrew Hoehner won 6-1, 6-1 over Chris Hurd.
The Hornets also won all four doubles matches in straight sets, only getting pushed a bit when Jonathan So and Ian Sul went through a close first set before taking out Brett Hockey and Jude Rudnick 6-4, 6-2.
ESM ran into unbeaten Baldwinsville on Friday and lost 7-0 to the Bees, who only surrendered one game in 12 sets of singles and doubles play.
Jamesville-DeWitt continued its win streak against SCAC Empire division opponents by topping Fulton 6-1 last Wednesday afternoon, getting all four of the points in doubles.
Up in singles, Lucas Chiorini shut out Max Scipone 6-0, 6-0, with Henry Commandeur handling Ezekiel Stelios-Hotchkiss 6-2, 6-0. In doubles Erin Bae and Furqan Hasan worked past Tyler Beeman and Ayden Cusic 6-2, 6-0, with Zach Price and Toby Thompson rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alexandre Lafrance and Aiden King.
Manlius Pebble Hill handled Homer 5-0 last Wednesday not dropping a set. Jaasim Zaman blanked Jude Hazard 6-0, 6-0 as Jon Howard got a 6-2, 6-3 win over Lucas Barbieri and Will Spear toppled Nick Barbieri in two sets 6-3, 6-1.
On the doubles side it was similar, Andy Lurvey pairing with Eric Hu to beat Drew Cotterill and Gray Jackson 6-2, 6-1 as Devin Trikha and Donovan Foster handled Caleb Hanson and Max Totman 6-1, 6-2.
But when it ran into undefeated Skaneateles on Friday MPH lost 4-1, getting its only point in doubles where Trikha and Andy Lurvey topped James Lovier and Asher Kozub 6-4, 6-2.
By those exact same scores Foster and Owen Hay lost to Lucas Woodcock and Will Salzhauer, with Howard and Hu shut out in singles and Zaman, in first singles, falling to Noah Soderberrg 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.
