True, it was a new week, and higher stakes, but in the same Chittenango High School venue where it won a week earlier, the Skaneateles girls track and field team topped Cazenovia again.
In this instance, Skaneateles claimed the Laker battle with Cazenovia in Tuesday’s Section III Class B-1 championships, essentially repeating what it accomplished on May 13 when it won the OHSL Liberty division meet.
Picking up a total of 100 points, Skaneateles held off Cazenovia, with 86 points, and South Jefferson, who was third with 78 points. Skaneateles benefited from the absence of Cazenovia sprint star Ashley Winn, who sat out with an injury she suffered during that league meet.
Gaining an early edge, Skaneateles won the 4×800 relay as the quartet of Madeline Adams, Liz Dwyer, Kaitlyn Neal and Julia Willcox finished in exactly nine minutes, 58 seconds, beating out Cazenovia, who was second in 10:06.88. Neal, on her own, was fourth in the 1,500-meter run in 5:04.42, with Adams (5:06.81) fifth.
Raenah Campbell’s eighth-grade campaign continued to pick up steam as she won the 400-meter hurdles, holding off Cazenovia’s Megan Stanford, 1:11.08 to 1:11.89, and also finished second (16.91 seconds) to Holland Patent’s Andrea Marfone (16.54 seconds) in the 100-meter hurdles final.
Willcox, like Campbell an eighth-grader, took fifth (1:13.70) in the 400 hurdles, but had her best finish in the high jump, where she cleared 4 feet 8 inches, putting her in second place behind Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Madison Lynch (5 feet) when it was done.
Amanda Wetmore, Katelyn Ellison, Taylor Woodruff and Laurel Parker nearly won the 4×100 relay, finishing in 51.89 seconds, inches behind Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (51.82 seconds) at the wire. Ellison, Woodruff, Olivia Gage and Anna Barnett got second place in the 4×400 relay in 4:19.19, with CBA (4:16.57) gaining first place.
Woodruff, in 1:00.83, got second place in the 400-meter dash behind South Jefferson star Skylar Pastor (57.84 seconds), with Olivia Gage fifth (1:05.71). Wetmore was fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.26 seconds), with Nikki Cole (13.64 seconds) in sixth place, as Ellison gained fourth (27.76 seconds) in the 200-meter dash.
Cole did go 14 feet in the long jump to finish fourth, ahead of Woodruff (13’11 ¼”) in fifth place. Mary Buck was third in the pentathlon when weather halted the proceedings.
