All is in place for the big boys track and field clash next Wednesday at Earl Hadley Stadium between two unbeaten OHSL Liberty division sides, Solvay and Westhill/Bishop Ludden.
Each side won their respective tune-up meets last Wednesday, the Bearcats turning back Syracuse’s Institute of Technology Central 92-47 as the Warriors dominated Chittenango 117-25.
Brian McLeod set the tone for Solvay against ITC, sweeping three field events. McLeod went 20 feet 7 inches in the long jump, soared 41’2” in the triple jump and cleared 6’3” in an impressive high-jump victory.
Josh Marotti augmented that effort by clearing 12 feet in the pole vault, while Luke Randall emerged with a win in the discus, heaving it exactly 117 feet.
On the oval, Nick Cometti was first in the 100-meter dash in 11.3 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 23.4 seconds, with Matt Battaglia going 52.5 seconds to take the 400-meter dash. Matt Creegan took both the mile (5:42.1) and 3,200-meter run (13:12.7) without serious competition, and Solvay won the 4×400 (3:51.2) and 4×800 (10:11.5) relays, too.
As for Westhill/Ludden, Corey Wilkinson went from a time of 23.8 seconds in the 200-meter dash to throwing the shot put 49 feet 2 ½ inches and the discus 139 feet, winning all three events.
Antoine Montgomery also was a triple winner, taking the 100-meter dash over Ben Rath, 11.6 seconds to 11.8, clearing 8’6” in the pole vault and going 38’11” in the triple jump. Mike Crisalli, second in the discus to Wilkinson, did take the long jump, going 17’6”.
Casey Bunce was victorious in the 400-meter dash (55.6 seconds) and 800-meter run (2:09.8), with Peter Guy taking the mile and Dan DeMauro (10:37.4) prevailing at 3,200 meters. Xavier Fluerinor won the 110 high hurdles (17.0 seconds) as Peter Lynch took the 400 hurdles in 1:09.2.
Chittenango did win two of the three relay events, but Westhill/Ludden prevailed in the 4×800 as Lynch, DeMauro, Liam Rodgers and Kyle Fitch got a time of 8:50.8.
Genny Corcoran led the girls from Westhill/Ludden to an 84-57 victory over Chittenango, winning both the 400 sprint, where she edged Erin Morrell, 1:07.9 to 1:08 flat, and also took the 3,000-meter run in 11:08.9. For her part, Morrell would win the 100 hurdles in 19.7 seconds.
Elsewhere on the oval, Annibel Coolican went 1:14.4 to win the 400 hurdles, while Alaina Kenny took the 1,500-meter run in 5:27.6. Coolican, teaming with Erin Christensen, Emily Washburn and Mary Kate Washburn, went 10:04.6 for first place in the 4×800 relay.
Christensen tied Coolican in the high jump, each clearing 4’10”,while Kayla Wild had a top shot put throw of 29’4 ½”. Caroline Coates took first in the long jump (14’1 ½”) and Caroline Black topped 7’6” to win the pole vault.
Solvay’s girls also prevailed, 80-50, over ITC, as Ashley Riggins took the 1,500 and 3,000-meter runs. Angela Frateschi was first in the 400 (1:10.3) as Christina Marotti prevailed in the 800 and Jhanasia McBride prevailed in the discus. The Bearcats were first in the 4×400 and 4×800 relays, too.
