Both of Cicero-North Syracuse’s track and field teams took large steps toward claiming the CNY Counties League regular-season titles thanks to last Wednesday’s sweep of its two meets against Baldwinsville.
In the boys meet at Bragman Stadium, Mark Broughton, Joe Castaldo and Peter Girardi, with two wins apiece, helped the Northstars get away from the Bees and prevail 77-64.
Broughton needed 11.3 seconds to beat the field in the 100-meter dash, and followed it up by taking the 200-meter dash in 23.2 seconds. Castaldo swept through the throwing events, tossing the shot put 46 feet 11 inches and the shot put exactly 120 feet.
As for Girardi, he pulled away in the 400-meter hurdles, winning in 58.8 seconds, and went 16.0 seconds in the 110 high hurdles to hold off teammate Austen McDowell (16.1 seconds) for the top spot.
Bryson Mayes also impressed as he unleashed a first-place triple jump of 40’8”. Jalen Jenkins had his best seasonal long jump of 20’7” as he took that title.
The girls meet at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium was even closer, not decided until C-NS got second-place points in the 800-meter run, just enough to fend off B’ville 71-70. Hannah Szumloz would take the 100 hurdles in 16.5 seconds, while Jacqlynn Halstead prevailed in the 1,500-meter run.
And the winning didn’t stop there, as C-NS’s boys would go to B’ville on Friday and again topple the Bees, 155 points to 102, plus six other sides at the John Arcaro Relays.
Morgan Austen, in the lone individual event, dominated the pentathlon, winning three of five events, and taking second in the others, to amount to 2,726 points, which was 521 points better than B’ville’s Sam Smith as the Northstars’ Jesse Lucchetti (2,053 points) was fifth.
Girardi won both the 110 hurdles (15.93 seconds) and 400 hurdles (59.73 seconds) on an individual basis, teaming with Evan Russell to win the 400 hurdles team event in 2:02.33 and, with Ed Mahana, getting second in the 110 hurdles.
Broughton, Avery Yarn, Steve Mirizio and Shawn Webb won the 4×200 relay in 1:35.68, and that group, with Neil Gill taking Mirizio’s place, went on to claim the sprint medley relay in 3:45.09, while Jalen Jenkins helped Webb, Mirizio and Broughton beat the field in the 4×100 in 45.35 seconds. Jenkins, Yarn, Mirzio and Broughton for second in the 1,000 sprint medley (2:07.21)
The quartet of Anthony Lupia, Bryan Bausinger, Colin Greenseich and Brian Traub won the mile relay with four times adding up to 19:28.02.
Castaldo, winning the individual shot put with 45’9”, and Nick Golembieski went 85’1 ½” between them to win that event, with Castaldo and Logen Lickfield second in the discus. They even had a 4×100 relay for throwers as Castaldo, Golembieski, Lickfield and Ross Mathewson got a time of 51.53 seconds, just behind B’ville (51.45 seconds) at the wire.
Dan Guino and Nick Antonello got second place in the high jump, clearing 10’6” between them, with Jenkins and Trayvon Wynn second in the triple jump. C-NS also was third in the 4×400 relay, 2,800 distance medley, pole vault, long jump and distance medley as Chris Hannan and Seth Steele were fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
A day later, during the Marcellus-Skaneateles Girls Invitational, Nicole Herringshaw won the high jump, clearing 5 feet 3 inches to beat the field by two inches.
Theresa Brown followed up in the pole vault by clearing 8 feet 6 inches to win that event. Destiny Monica, in the shot put, prevailed by heaving it 34’3” as no one else even reached 32 feet. She also was sixth in the discus as Szumloz (33’3”) and Javielle Fanizzi (33’1 ½”) were second and third, respectively, in the triple jump.
Jade Jenkins was second in the long jump (15’11”) and third in the 100 hurdles in 17.20 seconds, with Cheyanna Colin third in 17.53 seconds. Jenkins, teaming with Szumloz, Fanizzi and Olivia King, rose up to second in the 4×100 relay in 52.89 seconds, just behind Mexico (52.50 seconds) at the wire.
Halstead, in 2:28.10, got to fourth place in the 800. Maria LaMontagne was fourth in the 1,500-meter run (5:05.09), while Nicole Watterud took fourth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (7:52.93) and Jilliann Norris was fourth (11:36.44) in the 3,000, ahead of Savannah Stevens in sixth place. Madison Kolakowski was sixth in the 400 hurdles as Fanizzi got seventh in the 200 and eighth in the 100.
