For the Skaneateles boys tennis team, the aim was clear – get to the top of the OHSL Liberty division standings and challenge the likes of CBA.
At least it started well for the Lakers, who won every set of last Monday’s opener at Jordan-Elbridge and prevailed 5-0.
Austin Amory, in first singles, battled a bit against John Gallaro, but still won 5-0. Zach Driscoll handled Kyle Sherman 6-1, 6-1, with Alex LaGrow topping Sherman by those same scores.
Moving to doubles, Tom Bronk and Griffin Walawender earned a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Isaac Liptak and Clark Rossi, while Kevin Goetzmann and Matt Kallas shut out Nick Pierleoni and Anthon Trinh in a pair of 6-0 sets.
When Skaneateles did get its shot at CBA, though, it didn’t go well as, on a blustery Thursday afternoon, the Brothers prevailed over the Lakers 5-0.
Neither Amory, in second singles, nor Ethan Wilcox, in first singles, could get a game against four-time state tournament participants Matt Nardella and Colin Nardella. Driscoll did get on the board, but still lost to Alex Ojugbeli 6-2, 6-1.
Bronk and Walawender played a strong first set in a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Ryan Croucher and Greg Maziuk, while Goetzmann and Kallas lost to Dan Mantooth and Brooks Werner 6-2, 6-0.
Skaneateles would look to rebound this week with a trio of league matches against the likes of Westhill, Cazenovia and Chittenango.
