Girls track Lakers rise to Class B-1 title

No one, in the league or sectional ranks, was able to catch the Cazenovia girls track and field team.

The Lakers followed up its OHSL Liberty division crown by going to Marcellus on Thursday and earning the Section III Class B-1 championship. With 152 points, Caenovia fended off a strong challenge from Holland Patent, who finished second with 137 points.

A key to the win was the Lakers claiming two of three relay events. In the 4×100, Piper Gianforte, Jillian Vogl, Audrey Bowers and Ashley Winn finished in 51.85 seconds, nearly a full second clear of South Jefferson (52.78) to win.

And in the 4×400, Winn joined Tori Widrick, Hollie Marcelle and Ellen Burr to finish first in 4:12.11, more than six seconds ahead of HP. Marcelle, Margaret Wolsey, Megan Stanford and Jeanette Cudney got second in the 4×800 relay in 10:00.15.

Raeanne Clabeaux earned a key victory in the pentathlon, accumulating 2,187 points in the five events to edge Clinton’s Erica Freund (2,099 points) for the top spot.

Individually, Winn was second in the 100-meter dash in 12.70 seconds, edged by South Jefferson’s Skylar Pastor (12.65) as Vogl (13.32 seconds) was fifth. The 200-meter dash saw Winn again finish a close second (26.16 seconds) to Pastor (26.02). In the 400-meter dash, Vogl rose to third place in 1:00.87

Widrick moved her way to second place in the 1,500-meter run in 5:13.39, with Marissa Barrett sixth. Cudney earned second in the 3,000-meter run with a clocking of 11:18.58, while Michelle Karker was fourth in 11:37.67.

Marcelle earned third in the 800-meter run in 2:30.91 as Wolsey (2:34.53) got fifth place. Laura Fitch (1:15.10) and Stanford (1:16.04) were third and fourth, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles.

Paige Biviano claimed second in the triple jump with 33 feet 11 1/2 inches, where Burr (33 feet 3/4 inch) was third. Biviano tied for third in the high jump, clearing 4 feet 6 inches, and added a third in the long jump (15 feet 8 1/2 inches) and a sixth in the 100-meter hurdles. Burr was third in the shot put with a toss of 32 feet.

Rachel Grimm got fourth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (8:25.24), just ahead of Rae Tobey in fifth place. Gianforte cleared 8 feet 6 inches for second place in the pole vault. Grace Eberle threw the discus 82 feet 7 inches, taking fourth place and adding a fifth (29 feet 11 inches) in the shot put.
