Leff breaks sectional record in steeplechase

Having already established preeminence in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, West Genesee freshman Laura Leff took it even further during Saturday’s Glenn D. Loucks Games at White Plains High School, just north of New York City.

Leff steadily got away from Pawling’s Samantha Jorgensen, even with a slight stumble at the last water jump, and crossed the line in six minutes, 52.74 seconds, which broke, by 0.04 seconds, the Section III record set four years ago by East Syracuse-Minoa’s Leah Andrianos. Leff also broke the meet record by nearly two seconds.

Most of Leff’s teammates were at the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Invitational. Lindsay Weaver rose to second place in the 1,500-meter run in 5:05.6, just behind South Lewis’ Tori Campanian (5:04.5) as Brianna Richardson took third in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.8 seconds. Amy Hannahan needed 2:29.4 for third place in the 800-meter run, where Anna Leo (2:41.4) was fifth.

Emily Barriere worked her way to third place in the pentathlon with 1,932 points. Allison Iles was fifth in the 400-meter dash as Richardson took fifth in the triple jump, just ahead of teammate Abby Uczen, who also was sixth in the pole vault. Melissa Bakowski cleared 4 feet 6 inches for sixth place in the high jump. Mary McGlynn was sixth in the 3,000-meter run.
