In the season’s best conditions, the Marcellus boys track and field team completed a perfect 7-0 run through the OHSL Liberty division regular season with a sweep of Wednesday’s three-way meet against Christian Brothers Academy and host Hannibal.
The Mustangs beat the Brothers 77-64 and toppled the Warriors 83-57, and many of those points came from a near-sweep of the field events.
Chaz Hayes won twice, going 19 feet 4 inches in the long jump and soaring to a top triple jump of 40 feet 10 inches. Nick Huss again prevailed in the pole vault as Zach Wiley threw the shot put 41 feet 2 inches and Brian O’Connell cleared 5 feet 10 inches in the high jump.
On the oval, wins were more elusive, but Jesse Garn still tore to victory in the 400-meter dash in a season-best 50.7 seconds, while Justin Garn covered the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.9. In the 4×800 relay, Jesse Garn, Ryan Manahan, Joe Fallon and John Bell prevailed in a swift 8:27.5.
Marcellus would also sweep the girls meet, toppling CBA 100-40 and Hannibal 97-43. Distance runners Lizzy Dean, Rachel Garn and Maggie Dunn swept the top three positions in the 1,500 and 3,000-meter events and, with Tori Stopen, took the 4×800 relay.
Stopen, on her own, was victorious in the 800 (2:34.3) and helped Marcellus earn first place in the 4×400 relay, as was Jackie Epp, the winner in the 400 in 1:06.9. Makenzie Felicia needed 1:19 to cover the 400 hurdles as Sarah Francesconi cleared 4 feet 10 inches in the high jump.
Back in the May 6 Oneida Invitational, Rachel Garn broke a school record in the 800 with a time of 2:20.05. Abby Fallon set a personal mark in the 200 (28.68 seconds) as Dunn finished sixth in the 3,000-meter run in 10:56.65.
Garn then went to the Rome Free Academy Invitational a day later and set another school mark, in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, when she won the race in a time of 7:32.7. Dean claimed third place in 7:51.1.
Jordan-Elbridge’s girls team witnessed the OHSL Liberty first-place clash between Cazenovia and Skaneateles on Tuesday, losing to both sets of Lakers.
On the other hand, the J-E boys managed some success in its meet with Cazenovia and Skaneateles. Greg Bader ran the mile in 4:40.7 and also took the 3,200-meter run in 10:22.1, while Nick Byrnes won the 100-meter dash in 11.9 seconds.
