Just a day after the vicious rainstorms swept across Central New York, the Jordan-Elbridge and Westhill track and field teams squared off, joined by Hannibal. In the boys meet, both sides lost to Hannibal, but head-to-head the Warriors edged the Eagles 72-68.
For Westhill, Jack Honis won the 110 high hurdles (16.0 seconds) and 200 (24.2 seconds), while Christian St. Amour was first in the 100 (12.1 seconds) and 400 (52.0 seconds) sprints. Corey Wilkinson swept through the shot put (40 feet 11 1/2 inches) and discus (128 feet) as Tim Sheridan went 35 feet 9 1/2 inches in the triple jump and Mike Herholtz cleared 9 feet in the pole vault.
J-E’s Greg Bader was the top individual, sweeping the distance races. Bader ran the mile in 4:48.5, took the 800 in 2:06.1 and tore to victory in the 3,200 in 10:24.5. Carlin Coomey chimed in with a top long jump of 17 feet 7 inches.
In the girls meet, Westhill would also earn a narrow win over J-E, 71-69, and also top Hannibal 83-53 as the Eagles also got past Hannibal by a 70-56 margin.
Westhill saw Jessica Curry cover 1,500 meters in 5:15 as Lissa DiPaola (400 meters) also prevailed and the Warriors won the 4×800 relay in 10:50. Sam Peebles had a top triple jump of 30 feet 8 inches as Brianna Hefield took the long jump (14 feet 1 inch) and Alyssa Zabel cleared 7 feet 6 inches in the pole vault.
J-E countered with Brianna Byrnes, Rachel Scott, Rachel Betts and McKenzie Williams covering the 4×100 relay in 54.4 seconds. On their own, Scott took the 400 hurdles (1:12.7) and Byrnes won the 800 (2:33.6) as Phoebe Alley won the 3,000 (12:05) and Courtney Hourigan clearing 4 feet 8 inches in the high jump.
Also in league action, Solvay’s boys team had a split, beating CBA 73-68 while losing to Cazenovia 78.5-72.5.
In the simultaneous boys meet, the Bearcats also John Salvagno won three times in this meet. He had a top triple jump of 38 feet 4 inches, ran the 110 high hurdles in 16.3 seconds and also claimed the 400 hurdles in 1:02.7.
Elsewhere, Matt Battaglia took the 800 (2:11.5) and Eric Goodrich prevailed in the 400 (55.2 seconds). In the 4×800, Battaglia, Goodrich, Nathan Carr and Matt Cregan won in 8:57.9 as, in the 4×400, Battaglia and Goodrich joined Carmen Sarno and Nick Cometti to prevail in 3:46.9.
In the girls meet, Solvay had a 68-61 win over CBA, though it lost to Cazenovia 113-28.Kyndra Jackson earned the Bearcats’ lone individual title in the shot put with a toss of 28 feet 11 inches.
Westhill and J-E both went to Saturday’s Chittenango Invitational, where the boys Warriors earned sixth place with 35 points and the Eagles got 22 points to take 13th place.
For the Warriors, St. Amour took charge and won the 400-meter dash in 53.66 seconds, well clear of Ilion’s Evan Burgess (54.36 seconds) and the rest of the field. Honis notched second place in the 110 high hurdles in 15.82 seconds behind Skaneateles’ Sean Cooper (15.59), and also was third in the 400 hurdles in 1:03.56.
Wilkinson contended in the discus, throwing it 120 feet 1 inch for third place as teammate Carson Hicks (115 feet 2 inches) was fifth. Mike Herholtz got sixth in the pole vault.
As for J-E, Bader participated in the big event of the day, the Fleet Feet Mile, and took third place in 4:26.63 as Liverpool star Zavon Watkins won in 4:19.07.
Bader also teamed with Coomey, Nick Byrnes and Dylan Whittico as the Eagles were a close second (3:48.85) to Fayetteville-Manlius (3:47.69) in the 1,600 sprint medley. J-E was fourth in the distance medley relay in 11:59.94, ahead of Westhill (12:06.93) in fifth.
Westhill had 22 points and J-E 19 points to take eight and ninth, respectively, in the girls meet at Chittenango. The Warriors won the distance medley relay as DiPaola, Curry, Betsy Black and Alyssa Cwilko finished in 13:14.34, more than six seconds ahead of runner-up Cazenovia.
Courtney Hourigan put together a third-place finish in the pentathlon for J-E as she accumulated 1,562 points. The Eagles also were fourth in the 4×100 in 53.40 seconds, with Phebe Alley seventh in the Fleet Feet Mile in 5:50.70.
