The on-going exhibit at Everson Museum of Art presents Brooklyn-based artist Yui Kugimiya’s “live paintings,” stop-motion animation using expressionistic paintings and actual objects typically found in the home.
The video animations are light-hearted and playful with a hint of dark drama. For each frame, a scene is painted on the canvas with fluid, gestural brush strokes loaded with rich color, captured on video and then the scene disappears before one’s eyes as the next phase of the narrative unfolds.
Yui Kugimiya was born in Tokyo in 1981 and later moved to the United States where she earned an MFA in painting from Yale University School of Art.
“Live Paintings” runs through January; Everson Museum of Art is closed Christmas and New Year’s day.
