Liverpool, CNS field hockey earn late wins

With the post-season looming, it was vital for the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse field hockey teams to handle the games they were supposed to win in the last week of the regular season.

Both Liverpool and CNS would take turns firing at Watertown, with the Warriors going first Tuesday night and devastating the Cyclones in an 11-0 decision.

Amid the barrage, Emma Lamison scored three times, adding two assists. Danielle Abold had two goals and one assist, with Angela Charles getting a goal and three assists. Kathryn Albro, Emily Burns, Courtney Wrobel and Maddie Chilbert scored, as did Tess Tracy in a rare break from her goalie duties. Megan Sardella earned two assists.

Then it was the Northstars’ turn on Wednesday, and that ended 18-0 as most of the CNS roster took turns getting points before it was done.

Brittany Murphy had five goals and one assist, a career high. Maggie Kennedy scored three times, adding two assists, while Chenlan Xue, Alaina Stojkovski, Morgan Phillips and Shali O’Brien each had two goals. Adrianna Palucci and Angelina Florczyk both finished with one goal and one assist.

CNS had made a valiant comeback attempt in last Monday’s game at Rome Free Academy, but still took a 2-1 defeat to the Black Knights.

RFA’s Kaysie Gregory twice hurt the Northstars in the first half, as she earned one goal and assisted on the other, by Delaney Hughes.

Trailing 2-0 at the break, CNS stayed in it by having Meghan Wiacek earn seven saves. And when Kennedy, off a feed from Xue, put in a second-half goal, the Northstars cut the margin in half, but could not make it all the way back.

On Thursday night, the Northstars beat Cortland 2-0, getting both goals against the Purple Tigers in the first half as Phillips and Kennedy converted to help CNS improve its record to 7-6-2.

Liverpool, meanwhile, visited East Syracuse-Minoa, fielding its first varsity team in 21 years, and got away in the second half of a 7-0 victory over the Spartans.

Only ahead 1-0 at the half, the Warriors surged late behind Chilbert’s pair of goals. Lamison had one goal and one assist as Charles, Abold, Sardella and Catie Voegler took turns getting goals. Burns earned an assist.
