The town of Camillus has yet to kill any geese at Veterans Memorial Park. Parks and Recreation Director Eric Bacon acquired a permit from the U.S. Bureau of Fish and Wildlife Sept. 20 to kill up to two geese a day and 20 geese total, in an effort to control the population at Gillie Lake. At the time he said shooting would begin the following week.
Bacon went to Gillie Lake with a parks department employee certified in shotgun use to find no geese.
“It was almost like the geese read the newspaper,” Bacon said.
While the parks department has yet to find any, there have been geese spotted at the park.
“We’ll continue to follow the situation,” Bacon said.
Residents have inquired as to what will be done with the dead geese — some suggesting the goose meat be salvaged and used for food. Bacon said the town’s options are limited by the terms of the permit, which require that the geese be either buried or incinerated. He said the town will probably bury the geese.
