Late in the regular season, the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse girls tennis teams both emerged with wins.
For the Warriors, that meant beating Oswego 6-1 last Wednesday afternoon, boosted again by a singles sweep.
Sarah O’Hara survived Dominique Canale’s challenge to prevail 6-4, 6-3. Kristina Monakhova and Lindsey Wallace had straight-set wins, too, Wallace beating Emily Rurril 6-1, 6-1.
Though the doubles team of Maria Chayban and Melissa Inch lost, Megan Falzone and Samantha Thayer shut out Christina Dehm and Joanna LaFerve 6-0, 6-0. Madeline Cass and Kerry McSweeney beat Ashley Deveney and Allison Knight 6-1, 6-1, with Nicole
Hamilton and Laura Gardner getting a 6-2, 6-3 win over Cathryn Darling and Rebecca Krass.
Meanwhile, CNS was busy blanking Henninger 7-0. Brianna Almeda had to work in singles to beat Eva Bouchard 7-5, 6-2, but Jessica Geary and Kavita Suryadevara both prevailed, Suryadevara beating Courtney O’Toole 6-2, 6-1 and Geary blanking Nickey Sereluca 6-0, 6-0.
All the doubles matches proved to be one-sided affairs as the teams of Katie O’Leary-Lauren Osada, Alaina Henson-Kelsey Wilson, Cari McKenzie-Kaitlin Tucker and Marisa Licari-Meghan Wortel lost a grand total of five games in eight sets of work.
Liverpool also beat Henninger 7-0 on Thursday as O’Hara, Monakhova and Wallace lost just four games in six singles sets, and the doubles teams all won with sweeps, too.
CNS, meanwhile, tacked on a 7-0 win over Corcoran that moved its record to 8-1, the only blemish coming against Fayetteville-Manlius, whose win streak stands at 281 straight matches. Almeida and Suryadevara both won 6-0, 6-0 matches over, respectively, Chau Pham and Angel Kirby, while the doubles teams of O’Leary-Osada and McKenzie-Tucker also won in shutout form.
As it worked out, Liverpool got the no. 2 seed and CNS the no. 3 seed for the Section III Class A team tournament. Thus, the Warriors and Northstars could square off in the semifinals – if Liverpool topped Fulton and CNS did the same to Auburn in the first round.
