F-M, CBA notch cross country wins

In separate leagues, the Fayetteville-Manlius and Christian Brothers Academy cross country teams found lots of success in Wednesday’s meets.

The Hornets tore through its head-to-head encounter with Liverpool on its home course, winning on both sides by equal 15-50 margins.

Running together, Nick Ryan, Andrew Veilleux and Ben Thomas pulled off a 1-2-3 finish. Ryan won in 15 minutes, 59 seconds, Vielleux was one second behind (16 minutes flat) and Thomas got third place in 16:02.

In the next group, Mark McGurrin finished in 16:20, one second ahead of Andrew Roache and Jules Wellner, while Owen Strong finished seventh in 16:26. Conner Farrell earned ninth place in 16:40 and Collin Fitzgibbons (16:56) was 10th.

F-M’s girls team saw Leah Monsour move to the front and stay there, winning in 18 minutes, 22 seconds, beating Maggie Malone (18:34) by 12 seconds. Alana Pearl landed in third place in 18:42.

Emily McGurrin was fourth, in 18:46, while Jillian Fanning got fifth in 18:48. Fanning led a group where Katie Brislin, Heather Martin, Katie Sischo (18:49 each) and Courtney Chapman (18:50) stayed together and Christie Rutledge settled into 10th place in 19:13.

CBA’s girls cross country team went to 2-0 in the OHSL Liberty division after edging past Westhill, 28-30, in a three-way meet where it also routed Solvay 15-50.

Rachel Zajdel finished third, in a time of 20:07, behind Westhill teammates Jessica Curry (18:54) and Betsy Black (19:26), but the Brothers had more depth. Corey Hucko was fourth, in 20:30, while Maire Kate McGlynn got sixth in 21 minutes flat. Michaela Gildemeyer was seventh in 21:51 as Megan Pierce got eighth place in 22:30.

In the boys meet, CBA lost narrow decisions to both Solvay (28-31) and Westhill (25-33), but gained the top two individual spots as Brendan Smith won in a time of 16:33 and Jack Lenkiewicz finished second in 17:07. The Warriors and Bearcats claimed the next seven finishing spots before David Carey took 10th place in 18:19.
