After winning six consecutive matches to start the season, the West Genesee girls tennis team finally hit a snag in last Friday’s match against Cicero-North Syracuse, falling to the Northstars in a 4-3 decision.
All the Wildcats’ points came in doubles, starting with Lexi Myers and Anisha Shetty putting together a 6-3, 6-2 win over Katie O’Leary and Lauren Osada. Also in two sets, Miranda Dowling and Allison Theberge beat Alaina Henson and Kelsey Wilson 7-5, 6-4, while Danielle Fofi and Marisa
Joyce routed Danielle Dettman and Brittany Wilson 6-2, 6-0.
Needing just one more point, WG could not quite pull it off. In three sets, Karin Gasparini and Mackenzie Payne lost to Cari McKenzie and Kaitlin Tucker 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, while Taylor Ginestro’s early singles lead got away in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 loss to Kavita Surgadevara. Mackenzie Payne and Theresa Clark both lost singles matches in two sets.
Two days earlier, WG pieced together a 6-1 win over Henninger. As it has done all season, the Wildcats dominated in doubles, the teams of Myers-Shetty, Dowling-Theberge, Mackenzie Haley- Payne and Lauren Kesler-Olivia Wolfram all prevailing. Ginestro and Alexa Rahrle also took singles points, Rahrle defeating Nickey Sereluca 6-1, 6-2.
Marcellus returned to action on Wednesday, running into Cazenovia and falling to the Lakers 6-1. It lost every match in straight sets except for first doubles, where Renee Poulott and Haley Randall overcame a rough mid-match stretch to beat Olivia Bowser and Morgan Cowherd 6-1, 0-6, 6-4.
Two days later, the Mustangs got a huge league win against Westhill, hanging on for a 4-3 decision over the Warriors.
In the crucial singles match, Catie Nonemacher needed three sets to beat Bree Sherlock 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, while Emily Gascon beat Eileen Fleming. Westhill’s Katie Ferrara recorded a 6-4, 7-5 win over Colleen Stepleton.
Moving to doubles, the Mustangs scored Emily Hennigan and Leah May beat Adrianna Carello and Casey Hagen 6-0, 7-5. Holly Grosholz and Jessica Stottlar continued that trend with a 6-3, 6-0 sweep of Kathleen Dillon and Anna Pullano.
Westhill countered with Selina Scutari and Lauren Walters needing three sets for a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over Poulott and Randall. Phoebe Langdon and Bridget Sherlock roared past Cora Bechetler and Grace Hunt 6-1, 6-0.
