Caz soccer teams struggle early

Each of Cazenovia’s varsity soccer teams would have major struggles in Friday’s season openers.

On the boys side, the Lakers could not find the net in a 3-0 road loss to Cortland, while the Cazenovia girls team fell to Solvay 5-0 at the Fenner Street complex.

Against the Purple Tigers, the boys Lakers stayed close for a long while, only trailing 1-0 at halftime, but Cortland would pull away late.

Greg Masler accounted for two of Cortland’s three goals, with Pat Mahar getting the other.

Back at Fenner, the Cazenovia girls opened OHSL Liberty division play by taking all kinds of shots at Solvay, only to get turned away as Bearcats goalie Chelsea Root finished with 16 saves.

For her part, Laker goalie Jamie Enders had 21 saves, but could not keep everything out as Solvay’s Alexis Bandera polished off two goals and one assist to lead her side.

It wouldn’t get easier for the girls Lakers, as it visits Westhill Wednesday and also has its annual tournament at Fenner on Friday and Saturday. Cazenovia’s boys team hosts Skaneateles on Wednesday afternoon.
