Each of Cazenovia’s varsity soccer teams would have major struggles in Friday’s season openers.
On the boys side, the Lakers could not find the net in a 3-0 road loss to Cortland, while the Cazenovia girls team fell to Solvay 5-0 at the Fenner Street complex.
Against the Purple Tigers, the boys Lakers stayed close for a long while, only trailing 1-0 at halftime, but Cortland would pull away late.
Greg Masler accounted for two of Cortland’s three goals, with Pat Mahar getting the other.
Back at Fenner, the Cazenovia girls opened OHSL Liberty division play by taking all kinds of shots at Solvay, only to get turned away as Bearcats goalie Chelsea Root finished with 16 saves.
For her part, Laker goalie Jamie Enders had 21 saves, but could not keep everything out as Solvay’s Alexis Bandera polished off two goals and one assist to lead her side.
But in a complete turnaround, the Lakers went to Westhill Wednesday night and, with an inspired effort, took out the Warriors 2-1.
Rarely has Cazenovia ever won at Westhill. But it seized an early 1-0 lead, then converted again in the second half and held on despite the Warriors’ big advantage in shots.
Enders was superb, finishing with 14 saves. Kayla Dorrance and Kathleen Connellan picked up the Lakers’ goals, while Kristie Kleine picked up an assist.
As this went on, the Cazenovia boys team lost at home to Skaneateles 8-2. Both of Cazenovia’s goals came in the first half, courtesy of Alex Meade shots and assists from Tom Mackowiak.
Still, Skaneateles seized a 4-2 advantage, then pulled away in a wind-swept second half as A.J. Richichi and Kevin Rice both scored two goals for the visiting side. Doug Hoagland played in the net for Cazenovia and had 16 saves.
