Both of the Morrisville-Eaton and Canastota track and field teams would have solid finishes during Thursday’s Center State Conference II championship meet at Sauquoit Valley.
On the girls side, the Warriors finished third with 75 points, well off the pace set by the hosts from Sauquoit (208 points) as Cooperstown (98.5 points) finished second.
Taylor Gallup gave M-E a victory in the 800-meter run, her time of 2:33.4 enough to hold off Waterville’s Jenna Fallon (2:33.7) and the rest of the field.
Kim Horton would emerge with a victory in the high jump, clearing 4 feet 10 inches. Horton also was third in the pole vault, clearing 7 feet 6 inches, and added a fifth in the 100-meter high hurdles (17.9 seconds).
M-E’s 4×400 relay quartet of Gallup, Jordan Klein, Hannah Edinger and Emily Sherwood nearly won, edged out at the wire by Sauquoit, 4:20.3 to the Warriors’ 4:20.4. In the 4×100, Edinger, Sherwood, Amber Smalley and Alyssa Matusczak got second place in 54.6 seconds, with the Warriors sixth in the 4×800.
On her own, Sherwood was second in the 200-meter dash (27.7 seconds) and third in the 100-meter dash (13.1 seconds), while Edinger took third in the 400-meter dash (1:04.8). Smalley was third in the triple jump (31 feet 6 1/4 inches) as she and Kate Verne were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump.
Canastota’s best finish came in the 4×800 relay, where Elise Soper, Alexa Pederson, Marissa Williams and Danielle Carlone were third in 11:23.5. Williams also was fifth in the 3,000-meter run and sixth in the 1,500, with Francesca Popple fourth in the 800-meter run (2:37.2). Alyssa Wilson added a fifth in the discus.
In the boys CSC II meet, M-E picked up 49 points to finish fifth, with Canastota (28 points) taking sixth place. Cooperstown won the top spot with 177.5 points.
On the Warriors’ side, Jared Kent edged Mount Markham’s Eric Chilson to win the 100, though both finished in 11.2 seconds. In the 200, Kent got a clear victory in 23.2 seconds, with Waterville’s Mike Ellis (23.5 seconds) in the runner-up spot.
Kent also helped M-E’s 4×100 relay team finish second in 46.6 seconds and, with a high jump of 5 feet 4 inches, claimed third place. Keenen LeBlanc was third in the 400 hurdles (1:02.7) and Austin Hirsch was fourth in the mile in 4:44.9, adding a sixth in the 3,200. Christian Woodcock threw the discus 100 feet 9 inches to earn his own fourth-place finish.
Canastota saw Aaron Walker run the mile in a second-place time of 4:33.8 as he added a fourth in the 800 in 2:06.6.
Chris Barhart finish third in the triple jump (38 feet 8 inches), while C.J. Melander took sixth in the long jump and Jesse Puchales was sixth in the discus. The Raiders were fourth in the both the 4×800 (9:41.9) and 4×400 (3:41.5) relays.
