Looking to sustain its strong late-season work, the Baldwinsville softball team nearly gave it away in Wednesday’s game against Auburn.
A three-run lead against the Maroons disappeared — but the Bees would have the final say, getting a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to prevail by a score of 4-3.
B’ville got to Auburn pitcher Ali VanGiesen for a run in the second inning and two more runs in the bottom of the third.
The Maroons countered in the sixth against Bees pitcher Cassie Williams. So Liz Campbell replaced Williams and pitched a scoreless seventh, earning three strikeouts to go with Williams’ total of five.
Finally, the Maroons won it in the seventh. Sarah Kelly led the way at the plate with two hits and a walk, earning an RBI and scoring a run, while Katie Dobkowski, Katie Ducharme and Kristen Baldino also drove in runs. Katrina Conklin, Amy Sidorakis and Kristen Biedermann would score runs before it was done.
Following the rainout of Tuesday’s game with Fayetteville-Manlius, the two sides made it up Saturday — and B’ville won again, taking out the Hornets 4-1.
Not having to face Hornets pitching ace Amy Bright (who owns several no-hitters this season), F-M tagged the Hornets’ Maddie Gerbig for three runs in the botttom of the second inning, then added a run in the third.
Lindsay Varga drove in two runs, while Biedermann added an RBI and F-M helped out by committing four errors. All this helped Williams, who held F-M to four hits in a complete-game effort.
In a 10-team Section III Class AA playoff bracket, the Bees earned the no. 5 seed, and will visit no. 4 seed West Genesee to play in the quarterfinals Thursday afternoon.
