WG track sweeps past Corcoran

Both of West Genesee’s track and field teams engaged in spirited battles against Corcoran Tuesday afternoon, but still came up with solid victories.

The girls Wildcats more than doubled the Cougars’ output in a 94-46 victory, with double wins from Katie Bott and Laura Leff.

Bott ran the 200-meter dash in 27.2 seconds and tore through the 400-meter dash in 1:00.6, while Leff ran 1,500 meters in 5:15.7 and added a 3,000-meter victory in 10:17.4.

Paige Copeland, who won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:12.4, teamed with Bott, Alyssa Zeman and Kate Corbett to put up a top time of 4:23.9 in the 4×400 relay.

Brianna McGraw won the 100-meter dash (14.6 seconds), with Allie Mieander clearing 7 feet in the pole vault and Erica Fitch throwing the discus 76 feet 7 inches. Zeman, Kaitlyn Richards, Kelly Powell and Morgan Farmer ran the 4×800 relay in 11:11.8.

Though the boys meet proved much closer, WG relied on its strong distance running, plus Matt Ulrich’s pair of titles, to beat Corcoran 81-60.

Ulrich ran the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.9 seconds, then followed up by going 1:00.1 to win the 400-meter hurdles.

In a distance sweep, Sam Reedy took first in the 800 (2:05.1), Steve Houghmaster won the mile (4:51.7) and Martin Leff ran 3,200 meters in 10:28.5. Leff also helped Matt Gonnella, John Delallo and Billy Gabriel win the 4×800 in 8:49.5.

Houghmaster and Reedy helped elsewhere, too, joining Zach Lafaver and Jake Lafaver as WG won the 4×400 relay in 3:35 flat. Shut out otherwise in field events, the Wildcats grabbed one title when Sean Howard went 19 feet 5 inches in the long jump.
