Fresh off its hard-fought win over Auburn on April 27, the West Genesee boys lacrosse team now turned its attention to Friday night’s game against Corcoran.
This was a chance for payback against Cougars, whose 12-11 overtime win over the Wildcats on April 6 was the team’s last blemish.
Remembering that, the Wildcats did exactly what it wanted to do, performing well in most phases of the game to beat the Cougars 13-9.
Leading most of the night, WG limited Corcoran to a single goal in the first quarter, then kept on pulling away in the game’s middle stages, eventually doubling the Cougars’ production to take a 12-6 lead to the fourth quarter.
Corcoran would battle back late, but the margin was just too steep – and more specifically, the Wildcats had learned plenty from that first outing.
Joe Fletcher put himself on Corcoran’s most dangerous player, James Cathers, and his defense was close to perfect. All Cathers could manage was two assists, something that teammate Edmund Cathers (three goals) and Ethan Thompson (two goals, two assists) could not quite overcome. Scott Sidnan came up with nine saves, too.
Meanwhile, Corey Herrington and Dylan Donahue continued to establish themselves as primary attackers, as Herrington earned three goals and four assists and Donahue added three goals and three assists. To help them, John Glesener and Bob Gasparini each got two goals and one assist, while Tim Barber, Chris Murphy and Casey Schattner got the other goals.
WG, with a record of 9-2, goes to Cicero-North Syracuse and Oswego this week, its last two road games of the regular season.
