Westhill’s girls indoor track and field team would rise and earn first place during last Monday night’s Onondaga High School League Liberty/Patriot division championship meet at Manley Field House.
Overall, the Warriors had 93 points, just ahead of Cazenovia (81 points) as Section III Class B champion Skaneateles fell to third place with 73 points. Among other local sides, Marcellus had 35 points for fifth place, while Jordan-Elbridge had 19 points for eighth place.
Katie Powers gave Westhill a victory in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 11:32.92, with teammate Susan Lopez (12:00.33) in third place and Bishop Ludden/Grimes’ Taylor Parry (11:47.52) right between them in second place. In the 4×800 relay, Powers teamed with Lissa DiPaola, Catherine Coon and Katie Lenkiewicz to win in 10:37.65.
Paula Sanz prevailed in the pole vault, the only one to clear 7 feet 6 inches, as Morgan Roach won the shot put with a toss of 32 feet 4 1/2 inches. Mary Bailey was third in the high jump, clearing 4 feet 6 inches.Brenna Rainone nearly won the 55-meter dash, her time of 7.71 seconds just inches behind Skaneateles star Victoria Sakal, who won in 7.70 seconds. It was the same in the 300-meter dash, with Rainone (43.58 seconds) as Sakal prevailed in 43.50 seconds.
Caroline Buonocore was second in the 55-meter hurdles in 10.14 seconds. DiPaola took third in the 1,000-meter run (3:21.34), as Kristen Schoenborn finished sixth in the 1,500-meter run.
The Warriors were also fourth in the 4×400 relay (4:30.51) as J-E’s quartet of Brianna Byrnes, Julia Conlan, Rachel Scott and Kim Foltz finished third in 4:27.31. Westhill added a third (1:55.22) in the 4×200 rleay.
Marcellus saw Laura Quercia finish second in the 600-meter run in 1:42.34. Lizzie Dean was second in the 1,500 in 5:04.72 as Maggie Dunn (5:09.84) ran to third.
Molly McGuane took fifth in the 1,000 and helped Dean, Dunn and Quercia finish second (10:51.63) to Westhill in the 4×800. Solvay was fifth in 11:08.15. Sarah Kelly and Alana Todd were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the high jump.
J-E’s Kathryn Alonso-Bergevin earned second to Roach in the shot put with a throw of 26 feet 11 inches. Emily Rosebush was fourth in the 55 hurdles (10.69 seconds), while McKenzie Williams was sixth in the 55 sprint.
In the simultaneous CNY Counties League American division meet, West Genesee earned 60 points for third place, just behind Corcoran (62 points) for the runner-up spot as Fayettevile-Manlius (144 points) went to the top.
The Wildcats won the 4×400 relay as Kelly Powell, Alex Incaudo, Amber Sweeney and Katie Bott finished in 4:25.23, more than eight seconds clear of runner-up Central Square.
Laura Leff claimed second place in the 1,500 in 4:52.31, with Abby Kastick third in 5:17.89. Leff, Incaudo, Powell and Amy Hannahan would run to second in the 4×800 (10:33.69), as the Wildcats added a fifth in the 4×200.
Bott took second in the 300-meter dash (44.03 seconds) and was fifth in the 600. Amy Hannahan was fourth in the 1,000 (3:23.12) and Morgan Farmer was fourth in the 3,000 (12:31.06). In field events, Erica Fitch gave WG a second-place shot put toss of 26 feet 8 1/2 inches
