Liverpool indoor track and field runner Zavon Watkins offered something special when the Warriors competed at last weekend’s Molloy Stanner Games at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City.
Watkins, on his way to winning the boys 1,000-meter run, posted a time of 2:29.30, setting both a New York State and national record for any sophomore at that distance. What’s more, Watkins’ teamamte, Chris Clemons, finished second in the 1,000 in 2:34.31,
Another Liverpool runner, Alex Wilke, rolled to victory in the invitational mile in 4:18.51, while Cicero-North Syracuse’s Chris Buchanan took fifth place in 4:23.58 Wilke and Watkins both present as the Warriors won the 4×800 relay in 7:56.42, the only sub-eight-minute performance.
The Northstars saw Jared Thomson rise to the top in the shot put, his toss of 47 feet 11 1/2 inches beating Ed Tagoe (Cardinal Hayes) by 3 1/4 inches.
Moving to the girls side, CNS’s Jasmine Thompson won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.54 seconds. Katie Osborne was second and Jessica Wheeler sixth in the sophomore 55 hurdles. Thompson also was fifth in the triple jump (35 feet 9 inches) as Taylor Wendler, running in the Mile Invitational, earned fifth place in 5:02.33.
In the regular girls mile, CNS freshman Nicole Watterud rolled to second place, in 5:18.94, with Liverpool’s Lesley Bowers taking third place in 5:22.56. Maria Lamontagne gave the Northstars a fifth in the 1,000.
Watterud helped CNS take second place in the 4×800 relay in 9:28.57. Liverpool ran to fifth in the 4×200 relay. Liverpool saw Armani Moore take sixth place in the long jump, going 16 feet 5 inches. CNS’s Casey Wilmer was sixth in the shot put.
