Even though the post-season remains, one big barrier for the Baldwinsville boys volleyball team has been hurdled — namely, reaching first place in the CNY Counties League.
The big moment for the Bees came in Wednesday night’s home match against Cicero-North Syracuse, where it beat the Northstars in four games to move ahead by one game in the league standings.
B’ville took control right away, claiming the first game 25-16, and went on to prevail in the second game 25-21.
Even when CNS rose up and dominated the third game 25-14 and threatened to stretch the match to the limit, the Bees did not panic, instead getting the key points late in the fourth game to close out the match 25-23.
Pete Cuppernull led the way, earning 36 assists, an average of nine assists per game, plus eight aces, four kills and two blocks. Up front, Kyle Lattanzio had 10 kills, while Jarret Reaume got seven kills. Kevin Saintey had four kills, with Jake Zuke adding three kills. Dan Dubiel, with eight assists, aided Cuppernull in the backcourt.
CNS, in defeat, saw Jim Coleman earn 30 assists, with Tyler A. Smith (12 kills) doing most of the front-line work as Eric Munoz (six kills) helped.
