When the Westhill and Solvay cross country teams gathered on a wind-swept Wednesday at Long Branch Park for a three-way OHSL Liberty division meet against Cazenovia, both sides would leave happy.
For the Warriors, it was seeing the girls enter the league championship fray by knocking off Cazenovia 26-33, while also sweeping the Bearcats 15-50.
Solvay, however, countered by winning the boys meet over Westhill 24-35, also recording a comfortable 19-43 win over Cazenovia. The Warriors beat the Lakers 23-36.
Katie Powers led Westhill’s girls, her time of 19 minutes, 17 seconds just five second behind the individual winner, Cazenovia’s Malone Gabor (19:12). Lissa DiPaola landed in third place in 19:44.
After Cazenovia claimed the next two spots, Westhill swept the rest of the top 10 to secure the victory. Kathryn Christensen was sixth and Katie Lank seventh, each in a time of 20:25, while Catherine Coon took eighth (20:28) and Claire Purcell got ninth place in 20:52.
Over in the boys meet, another fine individual duel took place, with the Warriors’ Kevin Zych beating the Bearcats’ Matt Fedrizzi, 15:41 to 15:45.
Everything else went Solvay’s way, though, starting with Cody McCarthy’s fourth-place time of 17:12. Jeremiah Cregan was sixth, in 17:25, while Peter Cifretta was seventh (17:39). Jimmy Farella and Matt Morse each finished in 18:21), fitting inside the top 10 as Westhill’s Joe Savastano was fifth (17:21) and Casey Bunce was eighth in 18:17.
