For a full week, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls tennis team had to sit around and watch as rain took out matches against Fulton, Homer and Cortland.
When things resumed, the Red Rams ran into OHSL Freedom division leader Chittenango and, just as it had on Sept. 21, lost to the Bears, this time in a 4-3 decision.
J-D won every singles match in straight sets. Natalie Antosh beat Sierra Sleight 6-3, 6-3, while Priya Gupta handled Shelby Bogle 6-2, 6-0 and Claire Mooney got a 6-2, 6-4 win over Ami Petosa.
However, Chittenango countered by taking all four doubles matches. Despite a second-set shutout, Katie Cieplicki and Kyrin Pollock lost to Brandyn McDermott and Tanya Cziesler 6-2, 0-6, 6-4, and the great start of Stella Min and Lauren Swan went to waste in a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss to Haley Landers and Danielle Glasso.
A day earlier, the Red Rams showed little rust, beating Mexico 6-1 as Mooney, Gupta and Antosh each won singles matches in two sets.
Elena Marchetti-Bowick and Hannah Stefl beat Jackie McGuire and Emily Passer 7-5, 6-2, while the teams of Ash Masromi-Joanna Wu and Pollock-Cieplicki also earned straight-set wins. Nina Hylen and Shelby Cadiz took a 6-1, 6-7, 9-7 loss to Carrisa Woolson and Brooke Wills.
Making up a previously rained-out match from Sept. 22, Christian Brothers Academy won a private-school showdown with Manlius-Pebble Hill 4-3 to improve its record to 7-1.
Much was made of the singles showdown between the Trojans’ Anke Von Hantstein and the Brothers’ Olivia Messineo. Von Hantstein won, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, but CBA took the other singles matches as Shilpa Kamani stopped Anna Purcell 6-0, 6-1, and Colleen Cavanaugh got past Alex Verbeck 6-2, 6-3.
Needing two points in doubles, CBA got one of them when Julie Thomson-Basha and Emily Norkett beat Laura Flagg and Annaliese Trust 6-1, 6-2. Also in straight sets, Rebecca Scullin and Shannon Fitch got a 6-3, 6-4 win over Emily Barclay and Orla Andrews.
MPH grabbed two doubles points when, in three sets, Rebecca Kunz and Cara Adelson rallied past Laura Bulman and Lauren Mastroeni 5-7, 6-1, 6-4, while Rebekah Schu and Jonelle Miller got a 7-5, 6-1 win over Jenna Bartolotti and Evie Lopoo.
Prior to that, CBA rolled past Jordan-Elbridge 7-0, a match where one singles match got forfeited and the doubles teams of Norkett-Thomson-Basha Scullin-Fitch and Sarah Kitts-Taylor Procopio lost just four games between them. Kamani hammered Alicia Norfolk 6-0, 6-1 as Cavanaugh beat Nicole Elking 6-0, 6-0.
MPH began its week by running into unbeaten Skaneateles and taking a 6-1 defeat to the Lakers, despite some fine efforts.
Von Hanstein earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Amitra Deol in first singles. Purcell had a near-perfect start, but still lost to Elizabeth Lane 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Also, in doubles, Trust and Adelson led early in a 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 loss to Ryan Merle and Sidney Lawson.
