Westhill cross country handles Skaneateles

Both of Westhill’s cross country teams went north, to Hannibal, and would have varying degrees of success in last Wednesday’s three-way meet with Skaneateles and those other Warriors.

On the girls end, Westhill went two-for-two, toppling long-time power Skaneateles 20-39 and also dominating Hannibal 16-51.

Katie Powers won the individual race in 21 minutes, four seconds, with Lissa DiPaola working her way to second place in 21:23. Catherine Coon claimed fourth place (22:06), with Kathryn Christensen sixth in 22:22. Katie Lank (23:03) and Claire Purcell (23:04) earned eighth and ninth, respectively.

In the boys meet, Westhill lost a narrow 27-28 decision to Hannibal, while at the same time beating Skaneateles 20-35.

Kevin Zych easily took the individual race in a time of 17:06, as the Lakers’ Calvin Davis finished second in 17:28. Joe Savastano worked his way to fifth place (18:54), with Andre Remillard seventh (19:26) and Mitchell Lamb eighth, in 19:35. Hannibal won by claiming the other top 10 spots to nip Westhill by a point.

Bishop Ludden beat LaFayette 27-30 on the girls side, but lost to the Lancers 26-30 in boys action. Nick Barletta won the boys individual race in 17:54, with Jim Blasland fourth and Josh Allen fifth. In the girls meet, Betsy Black and Jessica Curry gave Ludden a 1-2 finish, each finishing in 20:58.

Only a point or two separated the Marcellus cross country teams from sweeping an OHSL Liberty division three-way meet against Cazenovia and Phoenix.

In the boys end, all went well, as the Mustangs beat the Lakers 22-39 and proved more lopsided as it beat the Firebirds 18-50.

Jesse Garn won the individual race in 18 minutes, 26 seconds, a full minute ahead of Dan Mannahan (19:26), with the Lakers’ Pat Dermody (18:38) in between.

Marcellus took over from there. Owen Dean, in sixth place, led a pack of teams that included Mike Epp, Mike Quercia and Tom Riccardi, as they ran together to a time of 21:12.

As for the Marcellus girls team, its no. 5 state Class C ranking might get effected as it lost a narrow 27-28 decision to Cazenovia, while also beating Phoenix 19-44.

Eighth-grader Rachel Garn won in 21:17, nearly a minute clear of Phoenix’s Marisa Turner (22:07), with the Lakers taking the next three spots before Laura Quercia finished sixth in 23:02. Maddie Bailman was seventh (23:26), while Molly McGuane finished eighth (23:42) and Olivia Higgins had a 10th-place clocking of 24:05.
