As if being 5-0 and in front of the OHSL Liberty division wasn’t enough, the Skaneateles girls tennis team proved it could outperform large schools, too.
The Lakers won its four-team division of last Saturday’s Central New York Tennis Invitational Saturday at Liverpool High School, earning 45 points as host Liverpool (35 points) took second. Auburn was third with 25 points.
Dominating in first doubles, Katherine Hill and Megan Holleran rolled past the top Liverpool duo of Ashleigh Caruso and Sarah O’Hara 6-2, 6-2 in the final round.
In second doubles, Ryan Merle and Sidney Lawson kept it up, topping the Warriors’ Chloe Lombardo and Humma Sheikh 6-4, 6-3, while Casey VanSlyke and Kathryn Magee won in third doubles, routing Lisa Sikora and Adrinna Kiewra (Liverpool) 6-1, 6-3.
Skaneatles also won two of the three singles divisions. Elizabeth Lane beat Liverpool’s Madeline Cass 6-2, 6-2 in the second singles final, while in third singles Hillary Fenner needed three sets to beat the Warriors’ Lindsey Wallace 6-0, 3-6, 6-2.
Up in first singles, Amitra Deol ran into Auburn’s Clair Minnoe in a 6-4, 6-4 defeat, while Dani Alderman and Katherine Kulick dropped the fourth doubles final to Marla Chayban and Melissa Inch (Liverpool) 6-7, 7-5, 6-2.
All this followed Friday’s 7-0 shutout of Marcellus, where the Lakers did not drop a set. Deol, Lane and Fenner gave up just seven total games, while Magee and Alderman won a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Holly Grosholz and Renee Poulott 6-2, 6-4.
Weather permitting, Skaneateles has its big league showdown with CBA on Thursday, after a Tuesday meet with Bishop Grimes.
