With newfound momentum after claiming the Camden Tournament on Sept. 19, the Cazenovia field hockey team moved back into its role as Onondaga High School League front-runner, taking the best shots of all foes.
That included Port Byron, who came to the Burton Street Elementary School field last Tuesday afternoon and put a scare into the Lakers before the hosts emerged with a 2-1 victory over the Panthers.
Belle Hoagland put Cazenovia in front 1-0, scoring off a feed from Abby Eschen in the first half. Port Byron drew even early in the second half on Sherri Dewitt’s unassisted tally.
They stayed 1-1 until Eschen, with six minutes left in regulation, flicked a shot past Panthers goalie Kellie Redmond for the game-winner.
Going for seven in a row Friday at Watertown, the Lakers achieved it with relative ease, taming the Cyclones 6-0 — and it could have been much more.
Cazenovia took an astonishing 45 shots, 39 of which Watertown goalie Cara Ahlgrim stopped. Hoagland did break through with a three-goal hat trick, adding an assist, while Jillian Vogl nabbed two goals. Tori Widrick had one goal and one assist, while Sarah Race notched two assists. Eschen and Sara Joseph earned assists, too.
So began a stretch where Cazenovia (7-0) would play six straight road games, including visits to Homer and Cato-Meridian early this week before a weekend appearance in Rome Free Academy’s tournament.
