When the Section III boys lacrosse playoff pairings got announced, Baldwnisville found out that it had the no. 7 seed — which meant it would be playing no. 2 seed Corcoran, someone out for revenge.
The Bees had gone to Corcoran on May 21 and stunned the Cougars 11-10, something every Corcoran player remembered — much to B’ville’s ultimate detriment.
For when the rematch in the Class A quarterfinals took place on Saturday night in Syracuse’s south side, the Cougars set a blistering pace that the Bees could not keep up with, leading to a 19-11 defeat.
A big part of that first meeting was the way the Bees’ defense had contained Corcoran’s talented brother tandem of James and Edmund Cathers.
Making the proper adjustments, both of the Cathers frolicked the second time around, pacing a Corcoran attack that tore through the Bees and didn’t let up until it had gained an 11-3 halftime edge, more in one half than it got in the entire first game.
That margin grew to 16-6 before B’ville made some inroads in the late going. By then, Edmund Cathers had six goals and two assists, with James Cathers adding four goals and seven assists as it advanced to face Fayetteville-Manlius in the Class A semifinals.
Tim Hayden and Billy Ward led the Bees’ efforts, as Hayden got four goals and two assists and Ward earned two goals and five assists. Kyle Styer also found the net twice, with Niko Manning, Dom Darcangelo and Nick Gaworecki earning single goals.
B’ville finished with a record of 10-9, and will see 18 seniors graduate, including Hayden, Gaworecki, Pat Briggs, Tom Foederer, Collin Kaval, Pat Mahar, Alex Gailor, Cookie Caloia and Bob Hennessey. Ward, Styer, Manning, Darcangelo and Evan States lead the returning cast for the Bees in 2010.
