By being everywhere, and doing a lot of different things fairly well, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls track and field team won an exciting four-way fight for the Section III Class AA title last Thursday at Bragman Stadium.
The Northstars had 106.5 points, just enough to beat Fayetteville-Manlius, who was second with 105 points by dominating distance runs and taking two of three relays. Liverpool was third (93 points) and Utica Proctor (83 points) had strong showings, too.
Somehow, CNS won despite having just one individual champion — Lindsay Raulli, who led a 20-point effort in the 2,000-meter steeplecahse. Raulli won in a time of 7:16.23 as Marissa Colburn finished second (7:29.15) and Schuyler Cary took fourth, in 7:59.14.
Jasmine Thompson gained points on many fronts, too. She was a close second (15.53 seconds) to Oswego’s Vanessa Sheffield (15.36 seconds) in the 100-meter hurdles, took third in the triple jump (35 feet 7 3/4 inches) as Sheffield won here, too. Thompson cleared 4 feet 10 inches for fifth in the high jump.
Taylor Wendler got to second place in the 3,000-meter run in 10:29.91, with Nicole Watterud (10:30.32) right behind in third place. Wendler also was third in the 1,500-meter run (4:53.93), with Raulli fifth (5:03.23) and Colburn in sixth place. Christina Sakowski was sixth in the 3,000 as Nicole Campagna took sixth (2:22.05) at 800 meters.
Gina Campagna cleared 8 feet for second place in the pole vault and backed it up with a third-place clearance of 5 feet in the high jump. Valerie Langevin landed in third place in the discus (105 feet 3 inches) and was fourth in the shot put, tossing it 33 feet 9 inches.
Watterud, Nicole Campagna, Nicole Gillette and Katie Laris got to second in the 4×800 relay in 9:47.92 as F-M (9:38.90) prevailed. CNS was also fifth in the 4×100 (52.33 seconds) as Alana Hotchkiss (who was sixth in the long jump), Sarah Dean, Samantha Harvey and Gina Campagna took part.
In a meet highlight, F-M’s Molly Malone ran the 800 in a time of 2:09.93, breaking a Section III record (2:11.2) set way back in 1980 by Tully’s Linda Kinney.
