Liverpool’s girls track and field team entered an exciting fray and contended for the title during Thursday’s Section III Class AA championship meet at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium.
The Warriors picked up 93 points, but all that meant was third place. CNS won, with 106.5 points, just edging past Fayetteville-Manlius (105 points) to finish in front.
Twice, Liverpool finished in front, including Harmony Cross dominating the five-event pentathlon, earning 2,620 points to beat Utica Proctor’s Jessica Wheeler by 389 points. Megan Earle (2,057 points) finished fourth.
Wanetta Rodney won an exciting 100-meter dash, edging Rome Free Academy’s Jessica Razy at the wire, 12.73 seconds to 12.74. Armani Moore (13.86 seconds) was third. Rodney, Moore, Connie Torres and Cara Scalisi were second in the 4×100 relay (49.92 seconds) as Corcoran won in 49.77 seconds.
Moore went on to the long jump, where she finished second, going 16 feet 3 inches. Erika Salem tied for second in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet, while Chelsea Attaway finished fifth and Meagan Turner cleared 4 feet 10 inches for fifth in the high jump.
Trina Bills ran to second in the 800-meter run, her fine time of 2:13.58 eclipsed as F-M’s Molly Malone (2:09.93) broke a 29-year-old sectional record by more than a second. Miranda McConnell was fourth, in 2:20.63.
Elsewhere, Kara Scalisi landed in third place in the 400-meter hurdles (1:08.38), with Nachez Brown fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.92 seconds). Brigid Heenan had a third-place time of 7:30.17 in the 2,000-meter steeplechase as Skye Borasky took sixth (1:02.90) in the 400.
Running in the 4×400 relay, Borasky, Torres, Chrissy Scalisi and Hannah Anthes finished second, in 4:07.29, as F-M (4:03.36). in the 4×800, McConnell, Rachel Putman, Lesley Bowers and Megan Murphy got fourth place in 10:14.33.
In the boys edition of the Class AA meet Wednesday at Bragman Stadium, the Warriors picked up 46 points and took seventh place, right in the middle of the pack. CNS won with 103 points.
Liverpool prevailed in an exciting 4×800 relay, taking charge in the third leg and pulling away from West Genesee. Zavon Watkins, Chris Clemons, Alex Wilke and Colin Savage finished in a time of 8:09.41, more than seven seconds ahead of the Wildcats.
In a close 4×400 relay, Watkins, Clemons, Savage and Wilke claimed second, in 3:26.68, just behind CNS (3:25.89) at the wire.
Corey Bundrage also won, claiming the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.46 seconds as his teammate, Joe Spernyak, took third in 16.08 seconds. Bundrage added a fifth in the 400 hurdles in 59.79 seconds.
Anthony Brais got third place in the 3,200-meter run in 9:59.69, with teammate Nick Hull sixth in 10:01.76.
Justin Albro competed in the five-event pentathlon, taking fifth place with 2,272 points. Jason Osborne was sixth in the shot put, tossing it 45 feet 11 1/4 inches.
