When they got together on a gloomy Wednesday afternoon, the Oneida and Vernon Verona Sherrill track and field teams would both gain something.
On the boys end, the Indians came out on top, 85-56, while the girls Red Devils won its side of the meet 83-58 and tied New Hartford, 65-65, just as Oneida was beating the Spartans 75-65.
Pat McLaughlin won three times in the boys meet. He tore through the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.8 seconds, had a top long jump of 21 feet 10 inches and also prevailed in the triple jump, going 41 feet 10 inches.
To help out, Mike Rabbitt won the 400-meter dash (50.4 seconds) and cleared 6 feet in the hihg jump. Jeff Barres ran the 400-meter hurles in 1:00.3.
In field events, Rick Rossi cleared 10 feet 6 inches in the pole vault, while Dave Gillmeister prevailed in the shot put, tossing it 42 feet 3 1/2 inches, and Justin Ward threw the discus 125 feet 7 inches.
VVS saw Tyler Curtis sweep to wins in the 100-meter dash (11.4 seconds) and 200-meter dash (23.2 seconds) as he also helped the Red Devils prevail in the 4×100 (46.2 seconds) and 4×400 (3:45.8) relays.
In the girls meet, VVS had McKenna Novak prevail in the 400 hurdles (1:16.8), with Rachel Brown running the 100 high hurdles in 17 seconds flat.
Oneida’s Jordan Armstrong prevailed twice, in the 100-meter dash (13.2 seconds) and long jump (15 feet 6 inches), and helped the Indians’ 4×100 relay team win in 55.1 seconds. In field events, Taylor Youngkrans took the discus (94 feet 10 inches), with Rachel Kline claiming the shot put (31 feet 5 inches) and Vivian Thurston clearing 6 feet 6 inches in the pole vault.
Led again by Rabbitt, Oneida stormed past Clinton last Monday afternoon, beating the Warriors 90-51.
Rabbitt tore through the 100-meter dash in 11.3 seconds, earned a victory in the 200-meter dash in 23.2 seconds and won the long jump by going 21 feet 1 inch.
As for McLaughlin, he settled for a single win in the high jump, clearing 5 feet 10 inches, and helped the Indians’ 4×100 relay team win in 45.2 seconds. Barres took the 110 high hurdles (17.2 seconds) and unleashed a winning triple jump of 40 feet. Gillmeister threw the shot put 44 feet 2 inches.
