Aptly named Playground Pavilion, the newest pavilion at Marcellus Park is situated near the playground and geared toward kid- and family-friendly events.
The Marcellus Town Board last week named the pavilion and prohibited alcohol and smoking from the pavilion.
Pam Carey, president of the Friends of Marcellus Park group, said the playground generated a lot of interest in the park when it was installed, and drew more schools and youth to the park. Placing a pavilion next to the playground will only add to the use of the facility and could be the perfect setting for birthday parties or school events.
The pavilion was built by Town of Marcellus Highway Department staff with money donated by the Friends. Sale of brick pavers leading the path to the playground helped fund the pavilion, Carey said.
“That’s what we’re here for,” Carey said.
Supervisor Dan Ross called the project a “town-community collaboration.” Carey and other Friends members approached the town board about building another pavilion only around a month ago. The highway crew erected the structure in a week, with only the sod left to be installed.
“I think that’s the uniqueness of Marcellus, everyone works together,” Carey said.
