Getting to open its season at its own facility of Bragman Stadium, the Cicero-North Syracuse track and field teams both gained titles during last Saturday’s CNS Relays.
On the boys end, the Northstars had 72 points, fighting past Rush-Henrietta, who had 57 points, and Corning, who finished third with 51 points.
One win came in the 4×400 relay, where Mike Fiume, Zach Brown, Tony Rogers and Jake Whritenour posted a top time of 3:33.59, nearly six seconds ahead of Rush-Henrietta.
Also, in the long jump, the Northstars went to the top spot as Eric Munoz (40 feet 10 inches) led among individuals. Munoz and Alex Neumeister combined to go 75 feet 10 inches, four inches ahead of Beaver River. Munoz also won the long jump (19 feet 8 inches) among individuals, as he and Vince St. James took third.
Kevin McCarthy and Devon Mertens were second in the high jump (11 feet 8 inches), while Jordan Thompson and Jared Thomson claimed the runner-up spot (85 feet 10 1/2 inches) in the shot put.
In the distance medley relay, Fiume, Brandon Barlow, Ben Brown and Chris Buchanan finished second (3:47.75), while Buchanan and Barlow also helped the CNS mile team get third place in 19:14.29.
As this was going on, CNS battled Liverpool for the girls championship and came out on top, with 63 points to the Warriors’ total of 49 points.
Jasmine Thompson ran the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.90 seconds and teamed with Katie Osborne to prevail in a combined 33.97 seconds. And in the high jump, Thompson and Gina Campagna cleared 9 feet 8 inches to win there.
Over in the 4×800 relay, Schuyler Cary, Katie Laris, Chelsea Davidison and Christina Sakowski won in 10:33.19, more than 17 seconds ahead of Liverpool.
Jessica Wheeler and Samantha Harvey took third in the 400 hurdles (2:34.16) As Wheeler, Thompson, Alana Hotchkiss and Sarah Dean took third in the 4×100 relay in 54.45 seconds. Valerie Langevin and Aniessa McGregor were third (176 feet 10 inches) in the discus, with Campagna and Dean fourth in the pole vault.
